Defensive Line Standouts - Week 6
Welcome to week 6 of our Season 4 Defensive Line Standouts! Now you may be thinking, this isn’t @manicmav36. Well, he decided to take a week off but I couldn’t let this article not get published so I am going give it a go and hopefully not disappoint too many people. Without wasting any more time, here we go!.
With the changes made to the offensive line this season, stats all around have been downgraded back to realistic expectations. Although sack numbers are down across the league this week, tackles for loss are steadily climbing. Speaking of that, we have one new record in this category. As for our DTs in general, they just didn’t show up this week. As anyone who watched the Las Vegas/Baltimore game noticed, there been a renewed interest in the ground game throughout the league. With more teams running the ball effectively, even the potential for sacks are down.
Defensive End Top Performers
J Tuck
($$$$) 8 TCK, 7 TFLHere he is, the new single game record holder for tackles for loss with 7. Leave it up to Jayce Tuck to set then break his own record. To put into perspective how impressive his 7 tackles for loss truly is, with these new bots nobody has exceeded 4 tackles for loss this season. After a slow start this season, he seems to be returning to the defensive end everyone fears. Although he didn’t get to the quarterback, he’ll have plenty of opportunities in the coming weeks as Arizona hosts the pass happy Orange County Otters followed by a double header with Colorado also visiting the desert.
J Andres
($$$) 6 TCK, 3 TFL, 1 SACKNext, we highlight Juan Andres. As previously mentioned, the running game has seen a steady incline this season and there’s no better example than in Las Vegas. Last night, we saw the Legion drive down the field with 16 consecutive run plays. Juan Andres was front and center for that and was an integral part in the goal line stand that halted that drive to a field goal. Making only his second appearance on this list in S4, it is hard to predict what type of performance you are going to get out of Andres week to week.
K Hendrix
($ x6) 7TCK, 3 TFLWhile not as flashy as Jayce Tuck, Kurt Hendrix is having a great season himself. He is the only defensive end to make this standouts list every week in S4. His 7 tackles, 3 tackle for loss were good enough to put him in the third defensive end spot on our list this week. We can attribute his success to the run heavy offensive scheme of Las Vegas. Despite the O-line changes, Hendrix has been playing as good as ever. Looking ahead, he will have even more opportunities to shine as Baltimore first heads to the icy tundra of Canada before heading home to face off against Mike Boss and company.
Other Great Performers
J.D. Boom
($$$) 8 TCK, 2 TFLG. Wright
($$$) 5 TCK, 1 TFL, 1 SACK C. Okonkwo
($$$) 4 TCK, 1 SACKR. Maddox
($) 4 TCK, 1 SACKAll of the players listed immediately above had solid performances as well, with almost all of them recording a sack. Boom and Wright were just a tick away on the stat sheet from edging out Hendrix. Both Otters defensive ends as well as Okonkwo are making their 3rd appearance on the list while Maddox is a fresh name in S4.
Defensive Tackle Top Performers
D. Miller
($ x6) 4 TCK, 2 SACK, There are few certainties in life but one thing you can count on is Dan Miller making D-Line Standouts! Earning the top spot on our list this week, Miller tied for the most sacks of any player this week and was the top tackler among interior linemen. Against the always dangerous Philadelphia Liberty, he led the charge allowing only 51 rushing yards on 23 attempts. Next up, Miller travels to Colorado followed by a home game hosting the Legion. With the Legion’s run first approach, you can bank that we will be talking about Miller again soon.
G. Clegane
($$$) 3 TCK, 2 SACKAs we can all imagine, there is a learning curve with any position change. For Gregor Clegane, not only did he switch positions but now he has start doing exactly what he has trained to prevent his entire career. Anyone watching the game last night could not tell this was only his 6th game at DT. He was a force and unfortunately for Pierno, he was on the other side. Clegane racked up 3 tackles and 2 sacks. This sack performance is as good as any defensive player has recorded in S4. I only expect Clegane to get better as he gets in rhythm with his new role.
V. Cox
($) 2 TCK, 1 SACKMaking his first appearance on our list this season, Vinny Cox snuck in with a rather modest performance. While he did manage 1 sack however, he was also front and center to witness Owen Taylor rush for 124 yards on a 5 YPC average. Luckily, next week he faces a potentially dangerous but so far underwhelming Liberty team followed by a trip to San Jose. I wouldn’t be surprised if Cox makes another appearance on our list in the coming weeks.
Other Great Performers
C. Chambers III
($$$) 3 TCK, 1 TFLChambers is the only other player on our list that even qualified as an honorable mention. Are the new, revamped OL bots too strong or was this just a fluke week? Depending on who you ask, you will likely get very different answers.
Team Appearances After Week 6
Baltimore: 17 (+2)
San Jose: 12 (+3)
Arizona: 12 (+1)
Orange County: 11 (+3)
Colorado: 6
Las Vegas: 5 (+1)
Philadelphia: 5
Yellowknife: 4 (+1)
Baltimore continues to hold the top spot on our list however they lost some ground to both San Jose as well as Orange County. San Jose is tied in the #2 spot, mostly on the backs of Miller and Okonkwo, who have an impressive 9 of the team’s 12appearances between them. Arizona holds the other 2 spot although this has been more of a joint effort as Jayce Tuck has played at a more human level. Orange County is comfortably in 4th place but closed that gap and could easily make the leap into the top 3. We had 2 teams that failed to make list this week. Colorado and Philadelphia remained stagnant with zero appearances which allowed Las Vegas to slide up to 6th place. This wraps up my attempt at D-Line Standouts. I'm glad the series is still going. It's great.
I don't think anyone can replace Manicmav, but ItsJustBarry definitely carried the torch respectfully.
I'm still curious why this season Bovovovo is getting the short end of the stick.
He has the same archetype as Ricky Maddox but is performing worse.
If he is lining up as an interior DL, and ricky is lining up on the outside, than I'd say that the balance is kind of working since he is no longer outperforming DTs as a DE.
Anyways keeping a close eye on this.

Not sure here either... the first 3(?) weeks Bork was lined up at DE and wasn’t doing much either. We have him at DT mainly because we have 3 startable DEs but only 1 startable DT

I did notice that defensive linemen in a 3-4 seem to struggle in general. Mark Ramrio is (was? Not sure if he still is) playing DE in a 3-4 and he has also been a non-factor this season. He's listed as an 84 overall DT. His teammate, Drew Davidson, is listed as an 89 overall DE and his numbers are way down as well. The have 20 tackles, 5 TFLs, and 2 sacks combined. I honestly just think that 3-4 is a bad defense if you're expecting your line to contribute. Really seems to funnel everything to the LBs.

Even IRL a big role that DLs play in certain schemes is just to soak up blockers to free up the LBs

For sure. I don't think your player is underperforming per se, your line is now just functioning the way a 3-4 line is supposed to.

I will say that DL definitely contributes in ways that don't have stats associated with them.
If you watch the games, there are often times a running back is forced to run to the outside. This causes them to spend time running laterally which can be risky as they aren't gaining yards when forced to the outside. If they aren't pressured or tackled, then they can make a play but if they are, then a LB can easily get a tackle for loss.
Also with passing plays, QB's are forced to throw the ball away or check down. This has no stats associated with the defensive line, but is definitely a positive impact from the DL.
DL might not have the most glory stats now that OLs are functioning, but it sure is fun to watch your circle break through OL and charge towards the RB/QB regardless of the stat outcome.
