*Cornerbacks : An Ongoing Analysis (3/14) - White Cornerback - 11-19-2017 [div align=\\\"center\\\"]Welcome to the 3rd part of our cornerbacks analysis series. We move onto week 3 which contained an exciting series of matchups. WEEK 3 (11/10) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Alex Hayden had an impressive outing last week for the Yeti only allowing 1 catch and a mere 7 yards, can him and Boggs possibly shut down the Baltimore WR tandem of Willie and Stormblessed. Darnell Turner and Antoine Delacour have had a poor series combined so far early in the season, can they get it together against the worst wide receivers core in the league where Brice Boggs is their biggest threat? Lavelle and Floggity have let up >300 yards in their opening two games combined this season, will they have a tough time against Jon Ross and Alexandre LeClair this week? Philippe Carter has struggled since week 1 to get accustomed to the Legion's playbooks so far this season, will his cornerback partner Timote Shoate yet again have to cover for his poor performances this week? After all they face the impressive wide receiver cores consisting of all pro Bailey Cook and QB turned WR Gosh Jarden. Tyler Oles has been impressive this season, he's the 3rd best cornerback this year after only allowing 91 yards from 7 catches this season. Can he mimic that form when marking one of the leagues best wide receivers in Bradley Westfield? Will Kevin Cushing be able to handle Robert Phelps? Marc Spector has allowed 251 yards and 12 catches from his opening 2 games, an absolutely horrible statline which makes him the 3rd worst cornerback this season, how will he fare going up against the pocket rocket that is Fox North? Verns has had a decent season thus far but will he be able to contain Budda Browning who now has a season under his belt? The final matchup this week pits Franklin Harris Jr. with a top tier wide receiving in the form of Mayran Jackson. Will Harris Jr. get embarrassed for a third consecutive week? Will Shane Weston put up big yards on Samuel Zhang? On the opposite side of the field, John Canton will be nervous lining up against Josh Garden, especially knowing that he has had the most yards allowed by any cornerback in the NSFL. How will he fare? Benson Bayley has also had a trial by fire this season , not quite at John Canton's level, but still not great. How will he match up against speedster Dustin Evans this week? NSFL WEEK 3 YARDS ALLOWED ![]() Jogn Floggity has a standout performance this week, not allowing a single catch throughout the game. For a man that's been a turnstile when shadowing wide receivers so far this season, this is a welcome change. Oles has a great week after only allowing 33 yards and 1 touchdown from 4 catches. This will surely push him up the rankings. Delacour has a good week by only allowing 36 yards and 4 catches. Spector rather uncharacteristically has a great week for the otters, only allowing 36 yards and 3 catches. Turner keeps up his top tier form and only lets 46 yards and 4 catches through his grasp. Philipe Carter begins to actually look like a half decent player this week, a change from his norm. 50 yards and 6 catches allowed. Benson Bayley put his best foot forward this week and as a result only let up 53 yards , 1 touchdown from 2 catches. He will have to work on his speed if San Jose wants to improve their CB depth. Lavelle doesn't quite emulate his stand out performance from week 2 this week but nonetheless has a decent game. 55 yards, 4 catches and 1 touchdown when all is said and done. Zhang begins to shape up this week, he only allowed 60 yards from 4 catches all game. Cushing had a rough week, not only did he allowed 83 yards from 4 catches, he also allowed a touchdown. Brice Boggs had a rough time at corner this week, allowing 96 yards, 1 touchdown and 6 catches. Maybe it's time for him to quit playing offensive and defensive snaps? Verns continues his poor form with 96 yards and 7 catches in week 3. Franklin Harris Jr. for the third consecutive week gets utterly embarrassed, allowing a total of 97 yards and 8 , yes 8 catches. Canton shows he just cant do it with 100 yards and 6 catches allowed. Hayden finally has an off week, allowing 102 yards and 7 catches in total. Shoate who has had a good season so far finishes this week with the most yards allowed. 114 yards, 6 catches and 2 touchdowns allowed. NSFL CORNERBACK RANKINGS ![]() Tyler Oles hops to the top spot for the first time in this series history, a solid week 3 and a series of circumstances helped him sit atop the rankings. 124 yards, 11 catches and 3 touchdowns allowed this season. He may have to work on his redzone defense though. Turner is the highest and only one of four people who did not move places this week. Solid outings have left him at #2 with 133 yards, 12 catches and 2 touchdowns allowed this year. Lavelle flies up 3 places in the rankings following impressive games with Yellowknife , can he sustain this form? 153 yards, 13 catches and only 1 touchdown are his statistics. Hayden falls hard from the #1 spot all the way to #4, fret not as only 30 yards separate #1 and #4. Hayden has allowed 154 yards, 12 catches and is one of five cornerbacks to not have allowed a touchdown this season. Zhang rises to #5 by stepping it up at AZ's #2 CB spot behind Franklin Harris Jr. 182 yards and 15 catches while not giving up a touchdown this year is fine at #5. Boggs drops from 5th to 6th this week after a lackluster week 3 performance. 191 yards , 13 catches and 3 touchdowns allowed is starting to signal to the rest of the league how much of a weak link he is for the Yeti. Carter begins to steadily improve from his hot garbage days of week 1 and week 2. He rises up 2 places from mediocrity to a somewhat respectable 7th place with 202 yards and 16 catches allowed. Shoate is our biggest loser this week, dropping a staggering 4 places to #8 in our rankings. 208 yards, 15 catches and 4 touchdowns allowed cement him in 8th place. Kevin Cushing has had tough matchups for the opening 3 weeks this season and as a result finds himself in 9th place with 220 yards, 13 catches and 1 touchdown let up. Expect him to fly up the rankings soon. Benson Bayley rises from 11th to 10th this week, 222 yards, 10 catches and 1 touchdown allowed is his statline. Bayley has began to improve after a shaky opening 2 weeks in the NSFL. Delacour rises to 11th from 12th place with 232 yards, 18 catches and no touchdowns allowed. Only time will tell if this is just a minor flash in the pan or whether he can get some momentum from week to week going. Despite an amazing week 3 performance where he didn't allowed a single reception, Floggity still remains nearly anchored to the floor of the rankings in 12th place. It will take another standout performance if he has hopes to rise up the rankings seeing how he's already allowed 235 yards, 12 catches and 1 touchdown already this season. Verns is the last mover on this list after dropping 3 places to #13. 258 yards , 15 catches and 2 touchdowns allowed are his numbers. Considering that just below him is Marc Spector, we can say comfortably that Orange County have one of the worst cornerback duos in the league. Spector remains in 14th place , having allowed 287 yards and 15 catches. While he hasn't allowed a single touchdown yet in week 3, he has been hemorrhaging yards in the middle of the field. Put in that work fella! Harris Jr. has had a torrid time this season and remains stuck in 15th place with 361 yards, 23 catches and 1 touchdown allowed. This man has been horrible, get him off the field he can't cover his own eyes, never mind an opposing receiver. Does this cast doubt on his awards picked up last season? Does yards allowed tell a more honest story than the default stat sheet for cornerbacks? It's what we're all here to find out. Finally John Canton, what can we say. He's having the worst form of his life with 367 yards, 19 catches and 1 touchdown allowed in only 3 regular season games. We don't know how it can improve for Canton but thankfully the only way is up right? Maybe we have to add a special #17th place for Canton if he keeps this up. This wraps up the 3rd part of this series. Expect part 4 to out soon! I personally would rather have a corner who gives up a bunch of yards and no TDs than one who gives up a few but a bunch of them. *Cornerbacks : An Ongoing Analysis (3/14) - White Cornerback - 11-20-2017 (11-20-2017, 09:53 AM)Sweetwater Wrote:@`Dermot` List is just sorted by yards allowed, there's no weighting on anything else but I could draw up a simple formula, this shit takes long enough to format and write up, not taking into account how long it takes to watch each snap defensively. To answer your question I'd actually rather the opposite because if you're not allowing yards up the field you're not allowing the opposing team to actually get an opportunity to score points (obviously your front seven and everything else is a variable), whereas if you've allowed many TD's but little yards then chances are your team let you down to get into that position and it's just circumstantial that the TD got scored on you. *Cornerbacks : An Ongoing Analysis (3/14) - Oles - 11-20-2017 (11-20-2017, 04:50 AM)Sweetwater Wrote:For Yards Allowed? Yes. I could easily spin it that you guys have those stats because of your inability to stop the pass. With all of the yards allowed and all it makes it easier to throw on a duo like you and benson, over a duo such as Colorado's (surprising to say). Having those stats just show you all have a lot more opportunities than say Cushing and I, who only have 3 pds. We haven't been thrown on as much, as QBs are opting to test their luck on people covering TEs and RBs as it's easier to test them. *Cornerbacks : An Ongoing Analysis (3/14) - DeathOnReddit - 11-20-2017 Harris JR is the goat. We haven't been thrown on as much, as QBs are opting to test their luck on people covering TEs and RBs as it's easier to test them. I guess? But we've been targeted 17 more times than you guys and only allowed 5 more catches, as well as 2 less TDs. We get an PD on 1/3 targets, with an INT 1/6 targets. That plus the fact that we've scored as many TDs as we've allowed. Our defense has allowed the 2nd least points per game as opposed to Philly's 3rd most (a difference of over a TD per game), SJS has 2 passing TDs allowed through the 3 games, Philly has 8 (all of which are to WRs). My point being, who cares how many yards you give up if your opponent can't score? If I give up back to back 40 yard catches only to get an interception in the endzone on the next play, I'd argue that's more valuable than someone who has low yardage because 3 of their catches were >10 yard TDs. But to just add one more thing to my point. Here are the QB passer ratings when targeting a CB duo, scale of 0-158.3, lower number = better CB performance: PHI: 158.3 BAL: 88.2 COL: 124.9 ARI: 97.4 LVL: 141.7 SJS: 81.6 OCO: 125.33 Make of this what you will, but there's a ton of evidence to say that yards have much less impact on a defense than TDs and Turnovers. For reference, if we take SJS average stats (1/3 targets is broken up, 1/6 is intercepted) then a QB who throws for 6 passes, would complete 4, with 1 INT, and no TDs. But lets say his passes all went for 99 yards, that would be 4/6, 396 yards, 1 INT. Which would give a Passer rating of 70.1. But that's not a lot of passes, so we'll take it a step further. SJS CBs allow a TD every 23 passes, so lets do 24 for some nice even numbers. QB stat line is 18/24, 1782 yards (99 per pass), 4 INTs, 1 TD. That's a Passer rating of 91. In comparison, Philly's average stats (1/7 Targets is a TD, 1/9 is broken up) then a QB who throws for 7 passes, would complete 6, with 1 TD, and no INTs. But we'll say all his passes went for just 1 yard, his stat line would be 6/7, 6 yards, 1 TD. This would give a Passer rating of 118.8. Again, not a lot of passes, but the good news is that the amount of attempts for you is comparable to the above statline (27), which results in a 118.8 again. This isn't meant to be a shit of Philly by any means, I just figured I'd use your team as you were the one who responded. No the really unfortunate thing about all of this is that these numbers have to be taken with a grain of salt, as we have no idea who was covering who on standard incomplete passes, which would technically alter a Passer rating. But going with what we have is all that we can do, so I used the numbers given to produce the results I got. @`Dermot` might be interested in this too. |
