dibs first

In the days leading up to the S6 NSFL draft, I was confident that I was going to be called up to the podium with the first pick. I had been in talks with General Manager bovovovovovovovovovo and their assistant TO the general manager Tbone for weeks before the draft, and almost everyone including Mel Kiper had me going #1 on their mock drafts. I was excited to play in Las Vegas, Nevada, but just a week or so before the draft, the team had announced that they were moving to New Orleans. I wasn't sure if the sudden turnaround of the team would change their plans at taking me #1, but I was excited at the chance to possibly be playing in New Orleans. I flew out to (insert name of city where the draft was held here) and sat at the table waiting for New Orleans to officially be on the clock. When my name was called, I walked up to the podium, mean mugged commissioner Dermot as i walked past him, and received my first unofficial Second Line jersey. I knew we had another pick at pick number 5, so I waited around so I could meet my new rookie teammate, who turned out to be Poopyface Tomatonose.

While my absence from the draft was legitimately due to a prior commitment, I’ll admit there was part of me that was glad to be out of the spotlight. No matter how confident you are in your own ability, no matter the sort of performances you put together throughout your college career, and no matter how many times you’ve been reassured that you will be drafted, there is still a part of you deep, deep down that says, “What if I don’t?” I don’t think I could have handled the weight of that thought on my shoulders if I was actually at the draft day ceremony.

When my manager, Ben, pulled me aside during the charity event to tell me that the draft coverage had started, my heart sunk. This was the moment I’d worked toward my whole life – my first taste of professional football.

That’s if I actually got drafted.

Ben had worked his magic and made sure that I was between activities when the coverage started. He sat me down in front of a Microsoft Surface Pro with the draft streaming and got his phone on standby for a call from one of the GMs. The catch was that we only had enough time to watch the first round. If I slipped, I wouldn’t even hear my name called out.

There was the usual back-and-forth between presenters while we waited for the first pick, and my name was tossed around a few times. It put me at ease a little. People knew about me, at least.

Then, out of the blue, @AzhekAhriman called Ben's phone. One of the GMs of the Kansas City Coyotes – the team with the first overall pick -- wanted to speak to me.

I answered with a timid and unsure “hello”, before getting the best news of my life.

Ahriman: “Congrats man! #1OA and the cornerstone of the KCC S6 offense”.

I’d made it. I was officially in the DSFL – not only in it, but the first overall pick! My dream of reaching the NSFL is now only one more step away.

KCC

I remember the day I was drafted. It felt like just a few days ago... (Maybe because it was a few days ago but hey, that would not sound as cool and mysterious as this sounds). It was the second round, and I had not been picked yet. Which I felt like I should have. Even though I performed pretty badly in the DSFL, I feel like that had been a fluke and in reality I was the best quarterback in the draft. Obviously the teams who had picked so far did not feel the same way I did. I can understand, but the yeti not picking any of the 3 quarterbacks in the first round I feel shocked everyone. Their QB had not been performing so well, and this would have been the chance for them to groom a replacement for them. I guess they still believe in him, but I dont feel the same way as them. But then I was finally picked. With the 11th pick, in the S6 NSFL Draft, the Arizona Outlaws, who my dad Arbin Asipi played for, drafted me. I am hyped to play with them, and super excited to help bring the Ultimus back to Arizona. Lets do this!

S4 draft was incredible. There was a lot of talk about who was going first overall, and the people in my camp definitely had me as the sure-fire top prospect, but there were critics in the media debating some others as the top choice. I just finished a great season in the DSFL after being selected first overall in its draft. I felt like I had a lot of momentum carrying me into professional football after wrapping up my collegiate career at NC State.

Back to S4 draft night. I was at the draft with my agent, family and coaches from the DSFL. It was an unbelievable experience, doing a lot of media. We had a lot of photo ops and things we were assigned to do throughout the draft day. I was definitely nervous as the draft began to unfold, it's hard to go into something like that without nerves. It went pretty quickly though, it just started to unfold and eventually I was hearing the Arizona Outlaws call my name. I just felt great at that point, knowing that all my hard work had paid off. The GM told me that they had a lot of big plans for my future. That management eventually left, so their grand plans went unfulfilled.

For a player that’s played every single snap of his career with one team, many forget that Nicholas Pierno was not only drafted twice, but has been on the roster of three different teams. After surprising many by leaving NC State after his junior year just days before the NSFL Draft, Pierno expected he’d be selected by Las Vegas after stellar interviews preceding the draft; however, Vegas passed on him time and time again—at one point, Pierno thought he might become Mr. Irrelevant and become the last pick. That changed when the Yellowknife Wraiths, enamored with his potential, took him with the 45th pick to groom him to be the next quarterback of their future. They sent him down to the DSFL Draft where he was taken second overall by the Kansas City Coyotes.

That’s when things went of the tracks. The Colorado Yeti’s quarterback, Logan Noble, was slapped with a year-long suspension (that eventually became two years). The Yeti made a trade and Pierno went from the original plan of a multi-year grooming process to immediate NSFL starter. In just a week-long span, Pierno was able to earn enough frequent flyer miles to get him two free flights to anyway in the world!

Now at home in Colorado, Pierno wouldn’t want to be anywhere else. No stress compares to his beginning days as a pro football player, though.

Being drafted to the pro league is something every young athelet has dreamed of and especially a young canadian football player being drafted to an american football league. It felt like it was yesterday but it was actually 3 days ago which is not too far ago. And obviously I remembered it happening.

I was that type of player that is not really needed because QB is a position which every team already has. And though I was easily the best QB in the DSFL because I won QB of the year. So what did i say? I said I would switch position because I do not want to be drafted late, like 16th in DSFL, I legit wanted to be a top 10 pick. There is no argument on it. I proved how good I am and how much potential I got and I simply deserve it.

So at draft day, I was nervous. The Hawks announce their pick and I hear my name and I am in full of shock and joy. I was so happy that I think I pissed my pants. It was something I would never forget. Though others hate it, the hawks and I enjoyed it.
