*Shadow GM Suggestions - tlk742 - 03-04-2018

In light of the recent “CoLOLrado” articles, I thought the Shadow GM that is me, would offer insight. In my power rankings, I often rail on the Yeti, saying it is a mess, so I get that this may be met with some hostility.

Before I get into it, I want to say, that I’ve had the been watching the Yeti from the falling short of the Ultimus to season 1 to the collapse that followed from s3 onwards, I also had the pleasure to interview Sapp during the s4 draft cast. In that interview, he stated a 3 year plan to turn the Yeti around into the contenders. So far, we’re in year two, and it’s not looking too great. So to take from my colleague and friend @`BayleyIsland`, I want to give a few pieces advice as what I would do if I were GM of the Yeti.

1. Tell everyone I draft they’re in for a long few seasons; so make the community great.
When I came in to San Jose, we knew the season was over the moment Cook went away, and while we felt we could contend in s3, it was a long shot. One of the things that Miller, Sharpei, and Canton did to really help build a strong community from the get go was a lot of games of Heroes of the Storm. We ran into the draft with the belief that “activity breeds activity” it kept us together when the seasons were bad, and a great rapport with each other was created.

2. Tweed, Crush, Ishigawa, Saint – Pick 2.
Each one of these four is great, Saint and Tweed are the tops of their field, and Ishigawa and Crush are the future. Right now though, none of those four can carry the team to the wins it needs. The Yeti need to get picks, and if a player is unlikely to resign, now is the time to get value while they can. These are first and second round picks of value that the team can get. All teams would improve with one of these four on their rosters, and would likely pay a hefty price for them.

3. End the Pierno project.
Ok, here we go. The big one. As the former favorite mediocre Wide Receiver, @ralz9 can get all the yards on the ground he wants, but the team would be better using him as a RB and Boss Tweed as the QB. Pierno is not spending his TPE right, and allocating them poorly. He’s still putting things into speed and shirking accuracy, arm and intelligence while they are all lacking. Ralz can get all the TPE he wants, but the team needs a QB who will put the team success ahead his need to get yards on the ground. He’s averaging 2.9 YPC on the ground to boot. He’s a jack of all trades and good at none. The Yeti need a QB who is willing to work for the team, Pierno is showing that he’s not. The team needs to give their troubled QB and ultimatum – 90 in accuracy, arm and/or intelligence, or else the team is going to look to draft another quarterback.

4. Scout, Scout, Scout.
Any team is as good as their draft class. And if the Yeti want to succeed, they have the reach out and interview any and all DSFL prospect there is, they cannot just hit in the first round, they have to hit in the second round, and third if possible. It’s on the Yeti to get the players they need, they need to draft not just the positions they need, just the best player available. They cannot afford to pick an inactive d-lineman while letting an active RB walk to another team.

5) Trade down. You need lots of players. Trade down into the middle of the 1st round and in return grab another 1st next season or even a mid 2nd round pick this season. I'd rather take 2 good prospects over 1 great prospect.

I'll reply later on my thoughts, but I was interviewed during the S5 draft, not season 4.

That's true you were, I forget we're in s6...really where the problem lies

S5 draft, but whatevs. Yes, we had a 3 year plan. Everyone we drafted knew about the plan before we committed to them. Hell, Everyone we scouted (which happened to be every prospect) would have seen that if they opened and read the message.
Season 5 Pre-Draft Evaluation Wrote:The Yeti are currently in the rebuild phase. IT will be a rough 2 years before we plan on being a very competitive team. Because of this, we are looking for very dedicated players who will work with us to meeting our goal. Does this intrigue or turn turn you away from being drafted by us?
Season 6 Pre-Draft Evaluation Wrote:We are in the middle of a rebuild phase. Our plans are to be competitive starting S7 and Championship ready by S8. It might be rough getting from point A to point B, but we are hoping that you are willing to take a sacrifice until that point. We realize that this might not fit with some players ideals. Does this plan concern or excite you for the future, and why?
As you can see from the quotes from our Evaluations before each draft, as long as the prospect opened and read the message, they would know that we were in a rebuilding phase and we are hoping to be competitive starting in season 7. Now, I never made any promises in those questions. We have a plan, and it will either succeed or fail. I can't do everything as a GM, but I can get us set in the right areas to have a better chance of succeeding.

Regarding the community, I believe the Yeti have one of the better lockerrooms in the league. Yes, most of us are young or young at heart, but we all get along pretty well. I asked other GMs about a week ago how many actives from their team are in their discord. Now, I never received totals from outlaws or Sabercats before I posted the image, but as you can see from the numbers, the Yeti have the most active in terms of players on the team who contribute in the discord lockerroom.

We also have one of the lowest TPE teams, but the most players over 150+ TPE. Whether those are actives or inactives, I never checked, but as a total, once again, the Yeti have (tied) most site active users in the league. I considered making a post last week on this topic, and that is when I created this, so it is 100% accurate as of a week ago. sure, some of our players dont update, but we are dealing with that. I'll get to that in a bit.

Welp. Just signed 3 of them. Meme took care of our vets. We have surveys that go out each year to our players and we get their insights on everything happening during the season and to gauge their interest. we get responses from everyone in our Discord LR. If they want out, we trade them to a team they want to go to. If they want an extension, we give them one. They want to take a team friendly contract, we wont decline them. They want more money? Thats what the team friendly contracts do for us. We want our players to be happy, and if they think they can find happiness on another team, we respect that decision.

From the outside, yes, the Pierno Project so far is a failure. He throws too many interceptions, fumbles too many balls, and doesnt put up points that are worthy of excusing those turnovers. as the teams gameplanner, it is a pain-in-the-ass to gameplan with Pierno at QB. some games he plays awesome. couple TDs, less than 1 turnover, everyone plays well. Then the next game, he turns the ball over 5 times. I run sim after sim, testing strats in different ways, and just cannot find a consistent pattern that gives us a high enough chance of winning. We have had multiple instances where we do over 300 sims and get a greater than 50% chance of winning, and the die just doesnt roll our way. it is frustrating, but we as a team know that one of these days the die will start rolling in our favor.

Now Back to Pierno, he is our lockerroom leader. he is an awesome guy that gets the LR hyped. He wants the team to win more than anyone else and has offered to do just about anything to help us win. We have talked about different ways of going about this issue, but that is not for public eyes at this moment in time.

Ok, I touched on the scouting earlier. We reach out to every prospect, and try to do so well before the draft happens. And after the Andre Bly Jr. Fiasco in the DSFL, I even scouted MYSELF just so no one would try questioning me. lets go through each of the Yeti draft picks since I became a GM.

S5R1: Carlito Crush - He is vocal. no one can doubt that he is a bust as a player. sure, his stats dont scream awards, but he is keeping up with the best of them in terms of TPE.
S5R1: Andre Bly Jr. - Me. Top TPE from draft class, unofficial, self proclaimed rookie of the year (make this an official award). sure I didnt have a choice, but that non-choice was a pretty damn good choice.
S5R2: Michael Tillman - A Pretty damn good Safety, and he is filling in at CB since we lost a couple DBs (Boggs and Novel) to retirement in the past year.
S5R3: Isaac Brown - A decent pickup, but he told us he wanted to be in Colorado before the draft, then requested a trade to Las Vegas after we drafted him. Due to my values that I stated earlier, I gave him his request and brought in a semi-site-active Kicker.
S5R4/5: Kracken, mango, mueller - all just shots in the dark. I didn't receive any messages from them before the draft, so I was going to try to get them active again, which failed. no player picked after kracken (first of 3) is active in the league.
---
S6R1: Dwayne Aaron - WR. We needed one badly and he is a pretty good TPE gainer. I see no fault in this pick, especially since we gained an extra draft pick from a team that you are familiar with.
S6R2: Bobby Ruckus - We Desperately needed DBs and he was the only known active in the draft. I wasnt going to force someone to position change to a position that is unforgiving to watch, just getting torched by WRs every game regardless of what your attributes look like. Sure, he wasnt going to be active for a while due to work getting busy, but that is why we are in a rebuild phase.
S6R3: Micycle McCormick - a 2nd kicker for our team after gaining Peg Leg last year through a trade. sure, they would split kicks for a quarter of the season, but man was he a cool guy. I would see that Pidgey photo around everywhere on the site, and I loved what he did with graphics, so I knew I had to grab him. If anything, I wanted to boost the lockerroom with this pick, and now he is both our starting kicker and punter.
S6R3: Storm Woods - At this point, the only active was a mobile QB who requested to stay at QB. I thought I would take a chance on Storm since he had replied to me via Discord that he wanted to make a comeback, and said he would enjoy going to most teams. I took the chance. I dont know if he talked to any other GMs. He shows up every once in a while in discord, and may still make a comeback, but given what was left, I cannot call this a bust.
S6R4: Grey Slax - He sent a message to every GM (to my knowledge) saying he was going inactive. I followed up, talked to him a bit, and he still wasnt coming back. I drafted him with no actives remaining and sent him a graphic that someone made for him, talked to him some more, and he tested the waters with our discord. He made an update or two, shows up once in a while and may make a comeback. Again, this was after all actives were gone, so I cant call it a bust.
S7R1: This is the pick we got from San Jose. just thought I would let you know again.

After going through each pick, maybe the worst was choosing Bobby Ruckus. He wasnt an immediate help as he had IRL stuff going on, but I stand by the decision.

TLBig GrinR - The yeti have had some setbacks and unpredictable stuff happen, but I laugh at some of your analysis.
