*S7 DSFL Draft Review - Ramero - 04-05-2018

Alright guys, so a lot of you have heard my name around the site in the past few weeks but for those of you who haven't I'm Ramero, or Rickey. My player is Rickey Ramero, and his backstory is that he comes from the powerful Ramero family that owns an offshoot of the original La Medellin Colombian drug cartel from Medellin, Colombia. After a mere weak in the league I was hired as an updater, and was unable to complete my updating duties for literally the only week I had to do them for, but I will be returning this week full time. Most recently though, I took on the roll of general manager with the San Antonio Marshals of the Developmental Simulation Football League. I joined the Marshals last season as a draftee free agent with three weeks left in the season in order to give myself time to earn more TPE and prepare for the upcoming draft, and ended up making a home for myself with the Marshals. We took home the league title this season, and are building a roster that is likely to repeat as victors.

Now as the general manager, I got to enjoy the experience of drafting the new cream of the crop onto the Marshals roster and watching some of the other top talents find their way into the halls of the great DSFL teams. Being a newcomer to the simulation football scene, I didn't know what to expect heading into my first draft, but given that I am NOT new to simulation sports in general I was completely confident in my ability to select the players we would need to lead an active and prominent draft class. In this draft, the Marshals were missing our 4th Round pick, which didn't end up being detrimental anyways as everyone skipped their 5th Rounders and we got a player who we could maybe coerce back into activity anyways.

Today we're going to be looking over each of the 17 selections in this Entry Draft one by one and evaluating how each of the players is expected to perform and their value heading into this season. I won't be holding back, and this is my honest opinion as a general manager and someone who has seen a lot of players start their careers on fire but slowly fizzle out before the NSFL draft even comes to happen. Let's begin.

1st Overall - Chad Pennington - LB @caltroit_red_flames
I have to say, I was very surprised when I saw a Pennington go in the first round, let alone first overall. None of the three brothers would have been my personal pick for the first overall selection, but now looking back at it I see the intelligence in the process of selection by the Tijuana Luchadores. Provided each of the three brothers stays active and engaged, they managed to snag themselves a solid trio. This pick was dangerous though, because it opened the door for opposing GM's to nab another active or future high draft pick from the Luchadores by holding the remaining two Pennington's hostage (a plan that I almost went through with). Pennington seems to be solid, having updated frequently and showing up from time to time on the league discord. I predict that he will remain active up until the draft, and perform solidly for the Luchadores this season.

2nd Overall - William Harrison - S @Mongoose87
I absolutely love this pick, Harrison is undoubtedly one of my favourite prospects in this entire draft class. While I think his username is one that has gone under cover so far in this class, the name William Harrison definitely hasn't. This is a young defensive player who is shaping up to be a viable top three selection in the S8 NSFL Draft provided he stays active. I'm not sure what his locker room presence is like, but Harrison was ranked right at the top of our draft board heading into last night's event.

3rd Overall - Childish Gambino - DE @Renrut
Gambino is another player I would have loved to have been able to nab with our second round pick, but sadly he was taken off the board super early in the draft. Active defensive line players like Gambino cannot be overlooked as they are crazy important to building a dynamic defense, and with someone who has showed the interest that Renrut has, this goes over as a very strong pick. I haven't seen a whole lot from his user since the draft last night, but that's perfectly normal.

4th Overall - Rickey Ramero - LB @Ramero
I did say earlier in this article that I was going to be completely honest, so I'll come outright and say it although it will come across as pretty cocky. I believe that if I wasn't a forced selection at 4th Overall by the Marshals, I would have gone earlier in the draft. Already holding a league job as well as being the general manager for San Antonio, being able to take me at 4th is an absolute power move. I'm super excited to return to San Antonio for a second season and to be a part of what looks to be the first time to be champions back to back (we already captured the first champions to win a second time).

5th Overall - Ben Horne - LB @iseedoug
This is a complete steal of a pick, Horne is a player that me and Roly had tons and tons of interest in heading into this draft, and someone that we had hoped to grab with our second round pick. Doug has been hyper active on the forums and over discord, and he looks to be building an incredible linebacker that would have been a great pairing with me to make a strong 1-2 punch. This selection by the Luchadores, opting to take Horne over the two remaining Pennington's was crazy smart and allowed them to get another active in the class.

6th Overall - James Brown - DT @Scootalicious
Brown was a player that me and Roly had looked at a little bit, and had been in communication with heading into the draft. As previously stated with Gambino, a solid defensive line is integral to the success of your defense and so Brown is an excellent addition for the Pythons in this draft class. He already has earned a bit of TPE, and you can see his name pop up around the forums which means that the Pythons likely grabbed a player that will remain active until draft day with their second round selection.

7th Overall - Ramadan Steve - DT @Kmarko
Ramadan Steve was right at the top of our draft board, and I was super excited that he might fall to us before he got stolen by the Coyotes with the pick right before ours. Kmarko has been active around the site and I swear is a name that I recognize from another sim league although I could be wrong. He has started an update page and earned a little bit of TPE already which is very encouraging, and I'm looking forward to seeing how the Coyotes utilize him on defense.

8th Overall - Brock Weathers III - LB @BWIII
I was super excited that we got Weathers with our second round selection, because bringing in him meant that we would have an extremely solid linebacker group for this season, adding to an already strong defensive team. With Ramero and Weathers lining up next to each other this season, the sky is the limit for this Marshals defense. Weathers has been active on our team discord and has been seen on the site, so I'm confident that he will remain active on the site come draft day.

9th Overall - Brad Pennington - QB @Dawegg
Here we have the second of the cleverly nicknamed 'Ad's in Brad Pennington who is the first of two quarterbacks off the board tonight. Brad has posted on the league discord from time to time and I have seen a couple of his posts on the website, but I have ill confidence in his ability to produce in this new setting behind veteran quarterback Sam Penner with the Tijuana Luchadores. Pennington should see more minutes towards the middle of the year, but for now keeping him interested will be of utmost priority.

10th Overall - Viggo Squanch - WR @Durden
Making the second of their back to back selections, the Luchadores selected talented and coveted wide receiver Viggo Squanch. The Marshals met with Squanch and expressed their interest, but the message back was the San Antonio would not be ideal location for Durden to want to land, something I found heartbreaking considering I know Durden as an impressive sim league member from other leagues. Squanch will be the primary receiving target for Pennington and should see considerable success this year.

11th Overall - Fonz Nuno - DE @Fonz nuno
Nuno was the final defensive lineman left on the board, and we had really hoped to grab him with our third round selection. Sadly, Kansas City got to him first and shored up their elite defense they were building which already consisted of Ramadan Steve and Childish Gambino making each of their first three selections lineman. The Coyotes quickly built themselves a defensive nightmare, and finished it with Nuno who looks to be a solid prospect if he stays active, which is the one concern that I have for him.

12th Overall - D.J Riddick - RB @OptiimusPR1ME
Riddick is an outstanding offensive prospect who we were blessed to have slip to the third round for us, and we are super excited to have him join our roster. Riddick is an active running back who created shortly before the draft, and players like that are always a risk but we took one and I'm confident that it will pay off. Riddick has engaged in on site discussion and is getting acquainted in the Marshals locker room already, so we're very happy with this selection. In terms of on field presence, Riddick looks to fit in perfectly as a receiving back for Vick who will return as our veteran quarterback.

13th Overall - Thad Pennington - S @Blastmeaway
Thad Pennington was the final of the three brothers selected and found his way all the way down into the start of the fourth round despite being an active prospect. I had the opportunity to get to know him a little bit last season as he signed on with the Marshals and helped us to our second Ultimini championship and I gotta say, Tijuana made a strong choice here when they managed to get him with their final selection in the draft. He will be a strong defensive threat for the Luchadores this season.

14th Overall - Hammer Jack - CB @TRAININDAY
This was an absolute steal of a pick, and I wish I would have seen it coming because Hammer Jack is shaping up to be absolutely top notch prospect. The Pythons got their man here, and losing that second round pick won't even be noticed now that they have an active all the way in the fourth round with him. I love his build, I love his attitude, and I love the fact that I'm seeing him around the forums fairly often. Wonderful selection.

15th Overall - Beat Meoff - K/P @Loganjj21
I don't have a whole lot to say about this selection other than when we messaged Logan, he mostly joked about his intentions in the NSFL and didn't seem to engaged, so while he may be active I'm not sure about his attitude.

16th Overall - Justin Davis - K/P @aceaviator
We didn't have time to look over Davis as a prospect, but the Pythons might have grabbed an excellent special teams player with this selection provided he stays active. I feel like special teams is overlooked completely despite it playing a fairly important part in the offense of any team, especially in a league like the DSFL where player production is limited. Great choice for the last active of the draft.

20th Overall - Alexander Overholt - QB @`incitehysteria`
Incite is a great dude, someone that I know from lots of sim leagues before this one, so it was nice to get him and hopefully we will be able to get him back in the NSFL with some messaging.

Great write-up. We were super happy to get such an established sim league veteran at 3 overall.

*S7 DSFL Draft Review - Roly - 04-05-2018

That's my co <3

Awesome article man and I completely agree with your thought processes. I've been lucky to have @run_CMC last season and now you this season. You definitely killed the draft for us SA

Also very excited to see what @BWIII, @OptiimusPR1ME and @`incitehysteria` can do for us this season with our sweet group of returning vets. And of course you at that 4 OA steal.

Let's get ourselves another Ultimini
