YKW is not exercising its TO for Robby Rainey in S8 (ending his contract at 2 seasons via the TO). Simultantously, we are signing Rainey to a new contract for a new amount.

I was actually kinda wondering if this is kosher... can you exercise an S8 TO when it isn't S8?
The rulebook says:
"Player Option (PO) - The player has a right in this season to opt out of their contract and go to free agency
Team Option (TO) - The team has a right to end the player's contract, without buying them out"
Genuine question not trying to start anything... rulebook doesn't say when you can do the TO but for PO it says it has to be that season so idk lol

We could determine that the option has to be taken or declined before the preseason or something, but then that would delay payments to players, and/or have to revert payments cuz someone got paid then opted out.

This probably shouldn't be allowed. In sports, options for a particular season are always dealt with in the off-season before that season starts.

Beyond what Bovo linked above, the rulebook doesn't mention options at all, only a vague definition that doesn't seem to conflict with what we've done. If we're going to get picky about timing, then the rules need to be clear about when players can be extended and when options need to be exercised.
