It’s that time of the year again, another top 100 player ranking that will come with huge promise, but probably end in massive disappointment. However, this time it will not be due to a lack of content, or broken promises, as have plagued this endeavor in seasons past. All the work has already been done, so all I need to do is release it to the people. No, this one will end in massive disappointment simply due to the fact that I think people will be a little jaded after previous failures. I intend to fix that issue and bring the top player rankings back into the limelight.
So, how is my list different from all of the ones that came before? That’s a good question, and one I am prepared to answer.
The first reason this list is different is that it relies on one person to compile the list, and one person only, me. Well isn’t your list going to be rife with prejudices and personal feelings? Great point, and no it isn’t, because I am not actually ranking the players myself. All of the players are ranked based on their Approximate Value (AV). What’s Approximate Value? Well AV is a statistical evaluation of a player’s season and an attempt to put a single number on the seasonal value of a player at any position from any year. This isn’t a definitive method of selecting the best player in the league but is a good method of encapsulating a player’s entire season and boiling it down to an easily digestible number. There will obviously be some issues such as players playing on a better or worse team, and having their stats inflated in that sense, but unless we ‘analyze the film’ on each and every player, you have to work with the statistics.
Now here is a basic rundown of how AV works. Each player gets a number generated for their performance as a passer, runner, receiver, front seven defender, secondary defender, kicker, punter, and returner. All of those numbers are then added up to produce the total AV of the player. The way these individual numbers are generated is by taking the overall offensive and defensive performance of the team on a per drive basis and normalizing it against the average, which then creates a number of points distributable to the team. So, for example, an above average offense will have 120 points to give to its offensive playmakers, an average offense will have 100, a below average offense will have 80. The same applies to defense. Then those points are split up amongst their contributors in a specific way. The player then has his production in the offense, or defense, quantified, and a proportional piece of the points available are assigned to him.

Now, just to get it done, I utilized the current methodology, but I don’t think it accurately represents our league as a whole, so I will probably be tweaking it in the coming days.
So what’s next? Well, that’s a good question as well. I’ve got a release schedule for the rankings, and my future plans for the entire thing. So let's go over the future plans, then I'll post the rankings, followed by the release schedule.
My plans for the future are first to calculate the AV for every player from S1 to S6 and add their numbers to the master list. Then, I want to re-evaluate the methodology and bring it more in line with my vision and something closer to representative of our league. Then I want to somehow incorporate AV a little more intimately into the league, as right now it’s just a fun side project. I have some visions to see it on Player Pages, utilize it in HoF voting, and have it as a tool for different era comparisons of players.
With that said, I would like to introduce my good friend @iamslm22 who will be writing half of these alongside me. I’m sure most of you have never heard of him, so if you see him on the forum or discord be sure to give him a big shout out. I’m grateful to him as I wouldn’t want to write everything up on my own.
