Meet S9 DSFL draft prospect Damien Arnold. The young safety is coming out of the University of Michigan where he has been a regular starter for the Wolverines. In S8, Damien totaled 84 tackles with 11 passes batted and two interceptions for Michigan. He was able to display good instincts and rare combination of size, speed, physicality and versatility. Many teams have Damien as a top safety for the 2018 DSFL Draft and some even expect him to be the first safety selected.
SCOUT: "Damien Arnold is an awesome football player, and I love the player he is. Saying that, I still struggle with how highly he is going to get drafted. Where we are picking (in the top 12), I don't know if I could draft a box safety with just some speed. The last time it happened with Dominic Verns, he got converted to a linebacker. It's a passing league now. You have to be able to match up and cover. I don't see him being bale to match up and cover. I don't see him being able to cover Paul DiMirio."
OVERVIEW: Damien Arnold was the number one safety recruit in the nation (all-American) and as a true freshman, he played in all thirteen games and had 66 tackles to earn freshman all-American honors. As a sophomore, he became a full-time starter which lead to all-American and four interceptions. As a junior, Arnold was a team captain and chosen as first team AP all-American. Arnold is an all-around safety that can play free or strong safety. A true leader, Arnold loves to come into the box on rushing attempts and lay the boom. Drives through tackles and has insane closing speed. Shows inpressive ball skills as a safety finishing with five interceptions. Can mirror tight ends across the middle with incredible balance and agility to switch on routes. Can guard slot receivers and destroys screen passes and weak receiver blocking. Will wreak havoc as a special teams contributor and goes through anybody. Fantastic quickness and long speed. Can play some nickel back as well. Arnold didnt commit a single penalty as a junior despite being very aggressive in all phases of the game. Aggressiveness can sometimes get him caught in bad situations like leaving his responsibility or biting on fakes. Arnold should be drafted no lower than the top ten with plenty of all-pro potential. He can play all over the field and he should have an immediate impact on defense from day one, including special teams. Arnold is a rare all-around versatile safety prospect.
PERSONAL: Damien Arnold was born and raised in Ann Arbor Michigan. He’s lived with his parents Xavier and Patty for his entire life, and has played every game of football for an Ann Arbor based team. That will come to an end when he is drafted into the DSFL on Monday, and he’ll be travelling at least as far as Kansas City for next season. Playing pro football has been his dream since a very young age though, so he is not concerned at all about where he has to move to next week. This is just the next step on his journey.
