*Was Drafting Hondo Second Overall a Mistake? - HalfEatenOnionBagel - 07-26-2018

Achilles Hondo was taken second overall in the DSFL draft this season by the Tijuana Luchadores. A standout player in college, an absolute workhorse in the gym and an outspoken team leader in the locker room, on the field and of course to the press; at the time it seemed like a brilliant pick by Tijuana to move up in the draft to get Hondo. However, now six weeks into the season, the stats for Hondo just don't seem to bear out what was expected of him, especially considering his draft position. With only about 140 total yards so far and just a single touchdown, Hondo hasn't exactly been a dynamic playmaker on offense. Now he's been lining up at fullback and tight end quite a bit so you don't exactly expect him to be racking up stats, but in the blocking game he hasn't been a massive success either as he only has 6 pancakes this year and Tijuana as a team is in the bottom half of the league in terms of rushing yards and yards per carry and is dead last in rushing touchdowns. It’s this lack of production that has led some to label Hondo the biggest bust of the draft. This may be a bit harsh to do for any DSFL player, especially one trying to find their way at two new positions, but in what was likely the deepest DSFL draft class to date, you have to wonder a little bit if Tijuana regrets taking Hondo where they did. Considering there was still so much talent left on the board, they easily could have snagged a star at almost any position. Even just a pick later at pick 3, D’Pez Poopsie was taken and so far he is approaching 600 total yards and has 7 rushing touchdowns. He’s been an absolutely electric playmaker for the Pythons this season and one of the best players in the draft class without a doubt. Hondo has started to pick it up a little bit, as he had his best offensive outing of the season in week 5 with 6 catches for 52 yards, and managed to get his first touchdown in week 6. But that’s six weeks just to score one touchdown! Here’s what Hondo had to say after the week 6 game in which he managed to get his first career score:

“It feels good to finally be back in the endzone after getting there so many times in college. Definitely feels like a big weight off of my shoulders. I know that touchdowns and yards, all those stats aren’t what the team is expecting from me, especially lining up at fullback. But, it still feels good when you can contribute in some way, especially scoring points. I’m definitely disappointed we lost though, it’s unfortunate because I can’t really celebrate all that much since as a team we didn’t succeed. I know there’s a lot more I have to do as we go forward and I’m still learnin, still getting better every day. We just gotta keep putting in the work and I hope we’ll see a lot of improvement in the back half of the season. Team is still doing well, we’re still in first place so I’m happy about that. I don’t care if I don’t score another touchdown this season if we’re hoisting the Ultimi at the end of it all. Team first, baby, team first.”
