One great thing about the pre-season, is that it’s a new time and a new season for everybody. Especially Vincent Sharpei, after his problems he had during training camp, he had to take a couple weeks off just to get healthy and in the right state of mind again for San Jose to use him effectively. When Vincent came back after his three week hiatus, it is almost like nothing had changed. He was welcomed back with open arms, and was able to get three days’ worth of practices in before their first preseason game. The first preseason game took place in Arizona, where the Sabercats lost to the Outlaws 31-17. The rest of the offensive line didn’t have to bad of a game, combining for seven pancakes and zero sacks allowed. Sharpei, still probably being rusty from his stint in the hospital, had one penalty for five yards, four pancakes, and two sacks allowed. After the game, he continued to beat himself up, getting disappointed in himself, allowing two sacks is just not acceptable. Ben Longshaw took him aside and calmed him down, reminding Sharpei that it’s only preseason and it doesn’t matter much, we are still learning about each other, and learning the ins and outs of the line.
Preseason week two came around, seeing Philadelphia travel to San Jose to face the Sabercats. The Offensive Line had another good game, with them combining for seven pancakes, one sack allowed, and one penalty for three yards. Sharpei had another off night, allowing one sack and contributing to nothing else. The Sabercats easily dismantled the Liberty to the tune of 48-0. It was a good game all around for the team, with Hunt getting enough protection to throw for five touchdowns, and Durden averaging 3.8 yards, while Diaz averaged 4.6. It was not the best game for stats, but Sharpei snapped out of it, coming to the conclusion that hey, shit happens, but the Line did their job in keeping the QB up and getting space for the runners. It wasn’t the worst game in the world for Vince, but he expects more from himself, and hoped to carry that into week 3 against Yellowknife.
Week Three saw San Jose on the road again, this time heading to the cold North, to face off against Yellowknife. Yellowknife came out early, taking a 21-6 lead. San Jose fought back in the 4th Quarter, and scored 10 points, but it was too little too late. Yellowknife walked away with a 21-16 win, and it hurt Vince. The Offensive Line for the Sabercats was outstanding in the loss, having zero penalties, fourteen pancakes, and two sacks allowed. Vince was feeling better and better as each week passed, and the team was feeling in a good spot after that game against Yellowknife. The regular season was around the corner and the line was getting their shit together, even if it felt like it took the whole preseason.
After the preseason, there were a lot of questions surrounding how Vincent Sharpei could keep up with the rest of the Offensive Linemen in the league, and there were people questioning his health and thinking that he would “Die on the field”. A lot of players were skeptical of how he would do, and his conditioning after being in the hospital. Not everybody knows the work Sharpei puts in day in and day out, especially when it comes to his teammates. Vince would have no problem going out there and giving his one hundred percent, as long as it means that the team is doing well and he will continue to put his whole body on the line, just to make sure that San Jose has a chance. A lot of people were telling Vince to take the season off, to get his health right and to come back next season stronger than ever, but that’s just not something he could do. Vincent Sharpei eats, sleep, breathes and bleeds Football, and this is the only way he knows how to contribute.
Going into week one, San Jose faced off against Philadelphia again, in San Jose again. The Liberty took an early lead, and it was not looking the greatest for San Jose, until Denzel Diaz returned a kick for 72 yards. That turned the game around for San Jose who went on to win against the Liberty 31-16. The Line allowed zero sacks, picked up 19 pancakes, and only had one penalty for fifteen yards. The team was proud of starting the season off right, and the line was looking to help carry San Jose far. After the game, Vincent Sharpei got the line together, and decided to take them all out for dinner. It was the least he could do, after receiving great support from everybody through this time being sick, and the acceptance he has received since coming back. Right now, San Jose will live and die by its offensive line, and Vince is going to do everything in his power to make sure that they can keep the unit cohesion and continue to dominate defensive lines.
After week one, a waiver wire was picked up by San Jose. Sammy Walters came into the locker room, and introduced himself to everybody. Vincent Sharpei was one of the first guys to walk up to him, and introduce himself. Finally, San Jose has a full line that is going to be ready to compete week in and week out, bringing in another man like this is going to help the team out in the long run. He will learn under the tutelage of Ben Longshaw and Vincent Sharpei. Watching already, Sharpei has seen a lot of work that Sammy has put in, and will continue to put in. They’ve already been in the weight room together, and Vincent has taken Sam under his wing while working in the film room. It is great to see this line work so well together so quickly, and it’s going to become even better once Sammy is caught up with the rest of the line. The San Jose Sabercats Offensive line is ready and excited to head back up to Yellowknife to avenge their week three preseason loss in the cold North. Expect to see a lot of hard work leading up to before San Jose takes off, and expect to see an amazing game between the two teams.
