The day has finally arrived. Zephyr has been waiting for this since about a day ago when he first heard there would be a prospect bowl. It is finally his chance to show teams he is prime draft material. Zephyr walks into the stadium and slowly takes it all in. There are rookies from all over here to show their stuff and everyone is excited. 4 teams will participate in the prospect bowl but only one can win. All the smells and sounds have Zephyr in an excited trance, but he doesn’t have time to day dream. He has to find his team and get ready to play. Zephyr spots his teams banner the Hanoi Typhoon. This will be his team for the next few days as the prospect bowl commences. Zephyr approaches the team and introduces himself. “Woof (I am Zephyr and I will be one of our defensive tackles)”. He then meets the other defensive tackle he will be paired with. Owen Baker is a hungry rookie looking to make a name for himself. Zephyr is excited to have an eager player at his side for the games to come. On his other side will be the defensive end Danielle Hunter, also a young fresh player looking to make a name for himself. There were a few players Zephyr recognized on his team. On the offensive line Dallas Fort-Worth is a familiar name. He played for the Pythons at the end of last season and Zephyr went toe to toe with him in a hard fought game. Another former Python is the teams wide receiver Troy Barnes. Barnes started with the Pythons after Zephyr played them so he doesn’t have first hand experience against thim. The teams quarterback Live Laugh Love played on the Luchadores last season. Zephyr remembers the game he played against the Luchadores. It was Zephyrs first sack but Live Laugh Love was on the bench for that game. Good thing because players don’t tend to forget getting sacked by a 250lb wolf. Also from the Luchadores was D’Hydration Hennessy as one of the teams 2 running backs. There were a few other notable players Zephyr had heard of through the bush. Theo AwardsSystemIsBad in the teams other offensive lineman. Deshawn Penne is the legendary pasta king himself. Zephyr has heard stories of the pasta king but has never seen him in action. He will be playing tight end for the team so Zephyr hopes the pasta rumors are true. The rest of the team is rounded out with fresh players ready to learn and improve. The teams second running back Zach Mullkin. The teams second wide receiver Don Keedic. The teams line backer Efram Geller. The teams safety Colin Kramer. The teams corner back Dominic Ricci. And lastly the teams kicker/punter Spooky Bazz. Zephyr was satisfied with his pack for the prospect bowl. Zephyr also took note of some of the competition
Zephyr smelled him before he saw him. The smell of wolf mixed with man. He wasn’t the first werewolf Zephyr has seen but he made Zephyr wary. The Gunslingers defensive tackle Fenrir Greyback. Zephyr knew he has to be on his guard. If this were the wild Zephyr would assemble his pack and put the beast down before it could cause damage. But here that’s not how things work and Greyback appears to be playing by the rules. Zephyr is glad killing is against the rules in football. He would never come face to face with Greyback on the field but that didn’t stop him for worrying about his teammate’s safety.
Meanwhile on the Bisons, several animal players showed up to play. The quarterback Sam Toucan was as agile as you would expect a bird to be. Zephyr was excited to play against him. Once Zephyr had his sent it would be easy to track him even behind his offensive line. Zephyr would just need to follow his nose wherever it goes. Now the offensive line isn’t going to be the easiest to breach after all they have Beeg Beeg Yoshi. A large Yoshi on offense seems like it should be against the rules but then again Zephyr is a large wolf so maybe all is fair in love and football. Either way if Zephyr is going to get past this Yoshi he is going to need to be on his guard. Maybe the fastest way is through him. Yoshi have such a fast digestive system that might be easier than going around. Might be worth a try anyway. The last animal on the Bison is the defensive tackle Frankling Turtle. Zephyr is skeptical about a turtle as a defensive tackle. He might be able to stop the rushing play but how can a turtle put pressure on the quarterback. Zephyr will just have to wait and see how this turtle does.
Speaking of turtle, Sol has Pasta The Turtle on their offensive line. Zephyr has seen Pasta play hockey while traveling with his human, so he knows not to underestimate Pasta on the field. Zephyr has seen pasta block hundreds of shots on the ice and is sure he can push past a few people in the offensive line. Zephyr is excited to meet him on the field.
Zephyr didn’t have to wait long. Game one was against Sol and Zephyr was ready. Well he thought he was ready. He matched up against the turtle and before he knew it he was flat on his back. A true feat considering wolves don’t go over easy. Pasta was a true offensive line threat and Zephyr had to adapt fast. Zephyr figured out pretty quickly that Pasta isn’t as agile as he is. Zephyr was never able to get past pasta for a sack but he did lead the game in tackles with 11. They did call a 15 yard penalty on Zephyr. Apparently you can’t mark your end zone as territory. Humans and their weird rules. The Typhoon walked away victorious in their first game. Taking down Sol 24-17. Zephyr was awarded Defensive player of the game. An honor he will cherish for the rest of his days.
Game two was more shocking. Zephyr thought getting to Sam Toucan would be much easier but that bird can move. It didn’t help that Beeg Beeg Yoshi was always in the way. Zephyr tried going around Yoshi but got hit with the tongue. He tried going over Yoshi but again the tongue. He even tried going throw him which kinda worked but after being swallowed and egged it took to long to break free from the egg. Zephyr still managed to get 7 tackles that game but he really had to work for them. Frankling Turtle on the other hand had 11 tackles. What is it with turtles and being good at football? Zephyr really underestimated him. The Typhoon still won the game 6 to 0. It was a hard game and they only scored 2 field goals. Both teams had some strong defensive players.
Game three was the game Zephyr had been waiting for. Fenrir Greyback was on the defensive line for the Gunslingers. He was every bit the terror that Zephyr had feared. Greyback had 8 tackles and Zephyr was worried his team would get hurt. Zephyr answered with 3 tackles one of which as a tackle for a loss. It was a tough game and Typhoon took a hard loss 25 to 17. Zephyr vowed to not forget this loss anytime soon.
Game four was against Sol again and this time they changed up their strategy. They didn’t try to get past Zephyr with runs but just throw the ball and hope for the best. Zephyr shut down two runs and was getting frustrated that he wasn’t able to get to the quarterback before he threw the ball. Pasta was knocking players down left and right. It didn’t end up mattering much as the Typhoon won the game 38 to 14.
Game five against the Bison again. Zephyr got a penalty for nipping but it was total bogus. Beeg Beeg Yoshi basically put his tongue in Zephyr’s face. Its not his fault it may have gotten nipped. Zephyr still found his 3 tackles and was still surprised when Frankling Turtle got 7 tackles. Zephyr still couldn’t catch Sam Toucan and was starting to get discouraged. Zephyr has played against animals before, but he was always better. Now he would have to work hard to be the best. The Typhoons still walked away victorious 30 to 19. Zephyr was happy with the win but disappointed in his performance.
Game 6 against the Gunslingers was a critical game. A win here puts the Typhoon in the finals. Everything rides on this. After the last loss Zephyr went through some pack tactics with the team about how to handle a werewolf when you have numbers. It worked well because Greyback only had 1 tackle in this game. Meanwhile Zephyr answered with 4. It felt good to see his team really coming together and handling business. The Typhoons win 28 to 21 and lock a date with Sol in the finals.
Here it is. The final game against Sol. The winner here gets to brag from now until draft day. The game did not disappoint. Both teams brought their A game and fought hard. Pasta the Turtle had 9 pancakes and no matter what Zephyr did, he couldn’t find a weakness in this turtle. Zephyr started to think turtles might be more dangerous than werewolves on the football field. Zephyr still showed up with 5 tackles and it should have been more but he got a 15 yard penalty for biting. It was more of a nip. The guy was hardly bleeding. While the Typhoons lead the game going into the fourth a 49 yard field goal tied it up and a 45 yard field goal was all she wrote. The Typhoons lost 21 to 24. Heartbreaking to come so far and lose but it was a good game and you can’t ask for much more than that.
Zephyr hopes his showing at the prospect bowl will impress the teams looking to draft defensive players. Zephyr had 35 tackles in the prospect bowl and sure there was a turtle with more but that means Zephyr is going to have to train harder.
