As we approach the DSFL draft it is important to see which teams have been successful and which have failed in drafting at the number one overall pick. To evaluate this, I review the top DSFL draft pick in the last 5 seasons and answer, where are they now?

The season 18 DSFL draft saw Willie B. Hardagain, the LB, go to the Portland Pythons number 1 overall. It is easy to say that this was a solid pick, as Hardagain would go on to win the DSFL LB of the year award. Hardagain was a product of the Big Ten, playing at Purdue throughout college. He served on a stellar defense for the Pythons, with a stacked LB core including Bobby Bouche and Kacey Dream. As Hardagain prepared for the NSFL draft, he proved himself at the combine. Hardagain was top 5 in the bench press, 40 yard dash, vertical jump, and broad jump. Hardagain had all of the measurables to make it big in the NSFL. He would go on to be drafted in the second round by the Chicago Butchers, number 29 overall. Hardagain was traded to the Outlaws immediately after the draft and continued his career there. At this point, Hardagain is unable to be reached for comment.

The season 19 DSFL draft saw a running back taken first overall, Darrel Williams, to the Minnesota Grey Ducks. This began a streak of back-to-back-to-back offensive players drafted first overall in the DSFL draft. The former LSU Tiger and Louisiana native had a modest college career, only rushing for 7 touchdowns; however, his average per attempt was upwards of 5 yards. After hard training in the offseason he became a dominant force in the DSFL. The Grey Ducks would win the Ultimini on the back of Williams and he won the Offensive Rookie of the Year and Running Back of the Year awards. Williams was drafted 7th overall in the NSFL draft and went to Baltimore. Williams continues to play on the Hawks as a part of a crowded backfield with Rick Skuff and Apollo Reed. Though Williams has had a more successful career than Hardagain, he has yet to reach the ceiling expected of a first overall draft pick.

The season 20 DSFL draft began the back-to-back years of first overall quarterbacks. Cal Lidious was drafted first overall by the Norfolk Seawolves. Cal would later be a mid-6th round draft pick in his NSFL draft. Cal would also be drafted by the Baltimore Hawks; however, unlike Williams he does not continue to play as a Hawk. Cal was unable to be reached for comment. Cal Lidious is arguably the biggest bust in the last 5 years of DSFL drafts.

Another product of Louisiana college football that has been drafted first overall in the DSFL draft. Monterey Jack was drafted by the Dallas Birddogs prior to catapulting into the NSFL. Jack was drafted into the NSFL in the back of the 2nd round by the San Jose Sabercats. Dan Wright currently holds the job as the Sabercats QB while Jack is currently in the DSFL. This year he through only 10 touchdowns with 8 interceptions, and never throwing a pass over 37 yards. The question becomes, when will Jack get his shot? Jack is not necessarily a bust, but when will he boom?

The most recent first overall DSFL draft pick was the safety Greedy Sly. The 194 lb player out of The Ohio State University brought a lot of talent to the London Royals. Sly had 92 tackles, 2 sacks, and an interception. This stellar performance has many fans wondering, will he be drafted first overall this year? It appears he has the talent, but will the number one overall pick want to go defense?
Choosing who to draft 1st overall is a difficult choice. The choice is made more difficult by pressure from fans and the locker room. Do you go hot shot offensive piece or necessary lineman? These DSFL draft picks had varying success moving forward in their careers. When it comes down to it, maybe there is an intangible that GMs need to look at when making that 1st overall pick.
