The Preseason is over and we're just about to kick off the regular season for S2 of the NSFL. Exciting times. We got a sneak peek at new players, old players, new teams and more, just to get an idea how things are going to look in the upcoming season. The Hawks, in particular, had an underwhelming year in Season 1, so the off-season and everything up until this point has been a full-fledged effort to turn that around. After what they did in the Preseason, it looks like they are on just the right path to do so.
Let's take a dive and look at how their pre-season shaped up, while highlighting the play of their new starting RB, rookie Darlane Farlane, the man whose name cannot be forgotten, 'cause I gotta keep the hype train rollin'.
Game 1
vs. Otters
Score:
W 26-14
In the first game of the preseason, the Hawks took on a very good Orange County team. Right off the bat, the Otters scored...but those 7 points were quickly answered with an amazing 80-yd punt return for a TD by Darlane Farlane. If anyone wasn't excited about him yet, they were after that. From that point, the Hawks mostly dominated the game, more than the score says. Baltimore Kicker Turkleton held down the fort with 4 field goals, bolstered by a James Wright pick six. Farlane ended the game at 25 attempts for 93 rushing yards, adding a catch for 5 yards. His return numbers were also impressive, touting 2 kick returns for 56 yards, and 5 punt returns for 111 yards and a TD.
All in all, the Hawks looked great all around and there are many things to be excited about.
Game 2
vs. Legion
Score:
W 19-0
Game two featured the Hawks' first shutout of the preseason (that's right, they had two). It was against one of the expansion teams, the Las Vegas Legion, and there was buzz about being lineup problems with the expansion teams, but a shutout is a shutout. Turkleton used his iron leg to carry the team once more, and the win was sealed with a Scrub Kyubee passing TD. Farlane impressed once again with 109 rushing yards and 76 return yards. Only the second game in his preseason dominance.
Game 3
vs. Liberty
Score:
W 37-0
The third week of preseason was another shutout for the Hawks, yes back-to-back shutouts. Welcome to the NFL, expansion teams. I know there's all the hooplah over lineups, but it was 37-0. That's pretty bad. This time, everyone got into the mix with scoring. Turkleton had 3 FGs, Robinson had a rushing TD, Farlane had a rushing TD, Carmel Gisbon had a receiving TD. Decalour even had a pick six for himself. It was a great offensive AND defensive showing. Kudos all around. Farlane continued his impressive debut with 124 rushing yards and a TD. The man cannot be stopped.
Game 4
vs. Wraiths
Score: L 17-24
The Hawks lost this one. The Wraiths are an amazing team, though and Hawks gave them a run for their money. It really came down to a 56 yard Wraith TD late in the game that flipped everything against Baltimore. The run game wasn't as impressive this time - Farlane had 87 yards, while not terrible, it was on a pretty measley 3.2 average. Both numbers were the lowest of his preseason games. He added 4 catches for 14 yards.
When all said and done, The Hawks made a strong case for themselves in the S2 preseason. Farlane, just as many should have guessed, proved himself as the starting RB and premiere return man, with some great numbers. It will be fun to watch what happens in Season 2, with the first game fast approaching.
Farlane Preseason stats:
Rushing: 114 attempts, 409 rushing yards, 1 rushing TD, 102 yds per game average
Totals: 748 yards (rushing, receiving, return), 2 TDs
