Already called up and playing in the big leagues is San Jose Sabercats defensive end, Danny Methane. After a single season in the DSFL, Methane made the jump and was called up immediately following the NSFL draft. Methane dressed for only two pre-season games but made an impact right away. The Sabercats are still searching for their first win of the season and Danny Methane is looking to make an impact. Some experts are calling his slow start (no stats through two games) another bust for the Sabercats, but others think it might just be call-up jitters. Fans have been seen sporting his green and gold number 91 on the streets of San Jose and there is a ton of buzz around this machine of a man. The two-time Bednarik award winner (Collegiate defensive player of the year) adds quite the punch to a severely lacking Sabercats defense, and at only 23 years old, Danny Methane looks to make a huge impact for years to come. Signed for three years ($3 million per year), the Sabercats hope to get great results out of him before they have to pay him Aaron Donald money. Either way, I can name about seven quarterbacks who should be extremely afraid of this sack artist.

New player Hike Mughes joined the DSFL shortly after the initial draft, allowing him to link up with the team he had prior connections to. Being a close family of friend of current NSFL star and DSFL coach Joseph Askins, Mughes knew that he wanted to play for the Tijuana Luchadores because of this close connection, and he has already made a huge impact for the team. Despite a losing effort, Hike Mughes had a huge pick six in the first quarter of the Luchadores week 2 game which put his team in a good position to win a road game, despite the team not being able to maintain the lead for the rest of the game. However, this is a sign of things to come for Mighes, and the DSFL should be prepared to see a huge amount of production from Mughes this year, after his breakout year at UCF last season. Mughes is hoping to be the number one pick in the upcoming NSFL draft next season, and he is already on a good path to that after his great first few weeks for his team, and he is constantly grinding, trying to improve as a player week in and week out.

San Antonio is the place to play. The people, the food, the culture, it doesn't get any better than in San Antonio. I usually walk over to the field, and sometimes, it's crazy, I'll start walking and several dozen fans will get behind me. We'll walk all the way to the stadium with a huge group. It's a good feeling to be supported by the people of San Antonio. Whenever I'm in San Antonio, I play better to make all the folks in the stands happy. I want to reward the fanbase as much as they support me. There are many significant factors that come into play when considering home field advantage. San Antonio is home and when you are home, it feels a lot better. When you're out there, you know every thing there is to know about the field, and whether something is off or not. You're comfortable. And comfort is something we can all appreciate. Plus, we're so close to our residences, we can go home and rest right after the game. That's the same for all teams, I guess, but it's one of the reasons everyone loves playing at home. Compare our play when we're home and away, you'll notice some positive trends.

A player who looks poised for a breakout year is Arizona Outlaws wide receiver Viggo Squanch. Squanch already put together a strong season last year with 1111 receiving yards, which ranked eighth in the league. However, so far this season, Squanch has the second most receiving yards in the league through two games. With 215 receiving yards in two games, Squanch is on pace to finish with 1505 receiving yards this year. If he can maintain these numbers over the course of the full season, he would cement himself as one of the league's true star receivers. Now that he's entering his fourth season, Squanch is starting to reach his prime and he could be ready to take a big step forward this year. With Kevin Fitzpatrick continuing to develop and progress, Squanch is in a good position to benefit as his top receiver and to put up some big numbers both this year and going forward in the future. With Reg Mackworthy continuing to deal with regression, the Outlaws will likely need to rely on their passing game more this year so it will open up more opportunities for their receivers and will help Squanch to get a lot of receptions this year. Viggo Squanch is in a great position to take a big step forward this year and is already off to a very hot start.

Gus T.T. Showbiz is a great candidate for breakout player of the year. This is his 3rd season in the NSFL, and he's had ample time to adjust to the speed of the game at this level. He's shown continued growth throughout his career, and most QBs really start hitting their stride around their 3rd professional season.

Helping Gus's case as breakout player of the year is the fact that his team, the Orange County Otters, have added a lot of high-end talent to the offensive side of the ball over the offseason.

Long-time Otter Tegan Atwell returned to the Otters after a sabattical in Yellowknife. Carlito Crush also came back home after a small rental phase in New Orleans while trying to earn an Ultimus. Young runningbacks Ricky Adams and Seer Zephyrous continue to grow alongside Showbiz and are proving to be reliable weapons.

The Otters have tended to go with an air-raid approach on offense, it's hard not to when you had the greatest QB in the NSFL, Mike Boss. Gus T.T. Showbiz isn't near that level yet, but he's at least not an embarassment to the organization anymore. If I was a betting man, I'd put my money on Showbiz being a very good quarterback very soon.

Axel Hornbacher, defensive back of the Portland Pythons, is expected to take the jump to stardom this season. After entering the DSFL draft later than most, the standout defensive back came into the league with speed and tenacity seen only a few times before in the DSFL. Axel joined the same team that his father coached from S3 – S6 as Trevor Hornbacher was an assistant coach to Rashaad Brooks. His familiarity with the city, coaching staff, and training methods were apparent from day one and he was able to make an impact immediately recording 19 tackles and 2 pass deflections in the preseason. After 4 regular season games, Axel has recorded 17 tackles, 3 interceptions, and 6 pass deflections on his way to breaking the DSFL interception record. His versatility makes him an absolute threat in multiple types of coverage and the Pythons have utilized him well in the cornerback slot. Look for him to increase his numbers as the season goes on as Axel improves his agility and defensive IQ to become a top defensive back in the DSFL. Given his stellar play so far, it’s fair to say that he might set the DSFL record if he can continue his interception streak.

When looking at the defending Champion Baltimore Hawks - the answer as to who the best candidate for breakout player is pretty easy. Last season Vinny Valentine was a backup Wide Out playing behind Carter Bush and Budda Browning. This year he is playing with a new star Quarterback (Ryan Apple) and Vinny Valentine looks to be a star. He's already doubled his Yards from last year and looks to be a star. Through 2 games he has 201 yards receiveing and that makes Vinny Valentine good for the 4th highest mark in the league. Vinny Valentine has yet to find the endzone with receiving, but he's also making a crazy impact on kick returns. Vinny Valentine is a great bet to win breakout player of the year, he has incredible talent and the opportunity afforded to him by this Hawks offense is crazy high. Baltimore Hawks have high expectations this year, being the defending champions, and having a loaded offense, and a solid defense - the Hawks can expect to compete. Vinny Valentine will certainly be a big part of it. Whether it be through the air or on special teams I expect Vinny Valentine to get a ton of coverage this year and people will realize how much he broke out.
