I'm going to take some time out and do a deep dive in to the defensive players for the Atlantic Blackbirds. With so much talent on that side of the ball, I think that an in-depth look at these guys through out the week of the Prospect Bowl is necessary. Keep checking back after each game for my updates culminating with a wrap up on Sunday March 17th before the upcoming DSFL Draft.
I also wanted to take a second and tag the DSFL GMs to give them a little more information about the great defensive players that the Blackbirds have to offer before the upcoming DSFL draft! Hopefully you all can find this information to be somewhat useful when looking to fill your roster needs! @Ben, @iamslm22, @PDXBaller, @ScorpXCracker, @dizzyDC. If I miss anyone I apologize!
Defensive Line
Poster Nutbag (DT - Interior Rusher) @Thee_Autumn_Wind
At 6'3" and 308 pounds, this guy is slightly undersized by normal standards. However, when you speak in comparisons of Aaron Donald, he does fit the mold. Coming from Boston College, Nutbag is quick and athletic for his size. He will have to continue hitting the weight room to work on his strength, but his quickness is hard to come by with that size. Depending on what scheme Poster ends up playing in once being drafted to the DSFL could be a key to his success.
Game Performance
Game 1: He led the linemen with 4 tackles, but he also created pressure up the middle and took on quite a few double teams so that the LB's were able to move around and make plays.
Game 2: Poster tied for third on the team with 5 tackles in game 2 against the Wolfpack. Settling in to his role along the line, it seems that Nutbag could be an every game difference maker. After 2 games, he is second amongst defensive tackles for tackles and showing that he can be an impact player.
Game 3: I hate to just leave a blank space here, but that's pretty much what happened for Poster Nutbag in game 3. He was unable to make any tackles in the game but when I was reviewing the game film, you can still tell that his presence is felt by taking on double teams and allowing the linebackers to move more freely! Keep you head up Nutbag!
Game 4: 5 Tackles, 1 sack. Nutbag made up for his game 3 performance by posting 5 tackles and a sack in this one! He was getting after to quarterback and stopping the run as well. I think this game helps him in the eyes of DSFL GMs.
Game 5: 4 Tackles. Here as the prospect bowl series progresses Poster is showing his consistency and being an every game contributing force. Continuing to perform like this has separated him from the other defensive tackles in the DSFL draft in my opinion.
Linebackers
Marquees Acho (Balanced LB) @Huskies311
With a checkered past, Marquees Acho has some skeletons in his closest that he will have to deal with, but if he keeps it up on the field, those could be forgotten. At 6'3" and 245 pounds, the one year player from UConn has great speed and a knack for making the tackle on first contact. His strength could be an issue, but at this point that is somewhat of a reoccurring theme for many players. Finding himself in a nutrition and weight lifting regime at the next level could do wonders.
Game Performance
Game 1: Overall a quiet but steady performance by Acho in his prospect bowl debut. He contributed 5 tackles. While getting to know his new teammates, I think it was a solid performance.
Game 2: Lights on!!! Acho must have been upset after his game 1 performance or something because he decided to lead the team in tackles with 9. He did not contribute much else, but he definitely made his presence known. After a performance like that DSFL GMs must have Marquees on their radar now.
Game 3: 8 Tackles, 2 Sacks, 1 Forced Fumble, 1 Pass Deflection. You know what they say, "when you're on a heater ride the wave" and that's exactly what Acho is doing. If I were giving out player of the game awards, then it would no doubt go to Marquees in this one. These are video game type numbers that he is putting up and all I can see is him flying up draft boards! What a performance.
Game 4: 4 Tackles. Given his recent performances, this game may seem like a come back to earth game for Acho. Still he contributed well and the name he has created for himself so far is still well in tact!
Game 5: 6 Tackles, 1 Sack, 2 Forced Fumbles, 1 Fumble Recovery, 1 Pass Deflection. Acho is back to doing a little bit of everything again in this one and the performance was amazing. As I have said many many times, creating turnovers is the name to the game and Acho is doing just that. The linebacker depth of the Blackbirds must have DSFL GMs salivating in my opinion.
Rock Hardshaft (Balanced LB) @Rouchicus
Whether it's pure, unadulterated, rock-hard talent or just plain luck, Rock Hardshaft will be coming to a DSFL team near you in the very close future. The former porn star and blow pop loving linebacker is becoming a household name on and off the field (hide your daughters). Hailing from no other possible place than Las Vegas, this Sin-City prospect has a solid build at 6'2" and 240 pounds. Strength and speed coupled with agility give him the ability to move around and do multiple things at different positions (no pun intended). While some GMs may have concerns about his intelligence, some would say that you don't have to be smart to knock the hell out of opposing running backs.
Game Performance
Game 1: 4 tackles and 1 sack.
Game 2: 4 tackles and 1 sack. See what I did there? If anything so far, Rock is consistent. Doubling his performance in his first two outings, Hardshaft currently leads the Blackbirds in sacks and has started to make GMs believe that blocking him is a hard as well.
Game 3: 7 Tackles, 1 Tackle for Loss, 2 Sacks. That brings the Hardshaft to 4 sacks, when we all thought he had 1. No wonder the guy made a name for himself in the porn industry. Rock is getting to the quarterback on a consistent basis as you can tell by his three game performance and that is not going unnoticed. While he is tied for third on the team in tackles, he has produced in an all around fashion that only bodes well for the Rock.
Game 4: 8 Tackles, 1 Tackle for Loss, 1 Sack, 1 Safety. So what does a former porn star turned linebacker do....he goes hard! And that's exactly what Rock did in this game! All around a stellar performance and one that helps propel him even further up draft boards in my opinion.
Game 5: 7 Tackles, 1 Sack, 1 Fumble Recovery, 1 Pass Deflection. Another game and another sack. The sack man is the league leader in that category and I don't see why that would change at the next level. Absolutely awesome performance and I have to say that Rock Hardshaft may be the first linebacker selected from the Blackbirds roster on Monday night.
Johnny Slothface (Speed Rusher) @slothfacekilla
When I started doing research for this article, I got a little torn when I made my way to Johnny Slothface. By all accounts, Slothface is a hell of a guy and very involved in all facets, but his on the field play just hasn't materialized yet. At 6'2" and 235 pounds, size isn't an issue by any means, so I'm starting to wonder if it is a scheme issue. I do wonder about his weight moving forward to the next level as a speed rusher in the DSFL, but beating the guy across from him with his first step could be enough. Johnny is very quick but he does lack strength and the ability to get his opponent to the ground each time. Maybe a position change at the DSFL level could be in his future? I am hearing that he is open to the idea, so I'm sure GMs will enjoy his flexibility.
Game Performance
Game 1: Slothface finished the first game with 3 tackles and 1 pass deflection. While making moves towards the QB, Johnny is very good at getting his hands up in the passing lanes, which is useful at any level of football.
Game 2: 4 tackles and 1 forced fumble. Did Johnny hear what I said about getting his opponents to the ground and bring the BOOM? I guess so! Creating turnovers is something that is hard to teach so if he keeps this up, it would be very beneficial to his draft stock!
Game 3: 3 Tackles. Some might consider this game to be a slight step backwards for Slothface, but I think is shows that he is staying involved and still working to gel with the new guys. I mean all of us are facing the challenge of playing with new teammates and trusting our fellow men out there. I don't think this performance hurts Johnny by any means.
Game 4: 6 Tackles, 1 Sack. Johnny had a strong bounce back performance in this game and one that he can be proud of. Getting his first sack surely put a smile on his face as well.
Game 5: 8 Tackles, 1 Sack. Maybe Johnny was just warming up in the other games, but more than anything you can see the progression in his game by game stats. Always improving is the way to catch people's attention and I like what I'm seeing from Slothface!
Lightsout Lewis (Coverage LB) @flyeaglesfly29
Not to be bias here, given that I know this guy really damn well, but I think he has a chance to be very solid at the next level. At 6'2" and 227 pounds, Lewis is a versatile threat at the linebacker position with the ability to play multiple positions if necessary. Inside or outside linebacker and even safety are a real possibility for him. His speed and tackling ability are the strong suits of his game, but there is still work to be done in the areas of strength and intelligence. Lewis prided himself at being a coach on the field while attending East Carolina University and with time I think that will be the case again in the DSFL.
Game Performance
Game 1: In game 1, Lewis showed out by leading the team in tackles with 8. He was all over the field making plays and showed his versatility against the run and pass.
Game 2: This was a much quieter performance for Lewis coming up with only 3 tackles. I'm not sure if it was a mismatch situation or what, but he will have to do better than that moving forward to proof his worth to DSFL GMs.
Game 3: 2 Tackles, 1 Sack. Just because I'm the one writing this article doesn't mean that I'm going to blow smoke about myself and that's certainly not the case here. While I am happy that I was able to get to the quarterback for a sack, 2 tackles is simply unacceptable in my book. This has got to improve moving forward.
Game 4: 6 Tackles, 1 Sack. I was able to get my second sack here and I'm happy with the performance overall. Playing against my former college team mate Cameron Olsen @Rradum was a blast as well!
Game 5: 1 Tackle, 1 Pass Deflection. Saving the worst for last and that is exactly what the case is here. While I did have my first pass deflection, I think that the other linebackers on this squad might be showing me up!
Corners
Lucas Knight (All-Around Corner) @ven_knight
One part of the fearsome secondary for the Blackbirds, Lucas Knight is a standout cornerback from Texas A&M University. If Manziel was still at A&M, I'm sure his drug use would be worse having to face this guy in practice each day. All Around is a great way to describe his playing style for sure and at 6'0" even, weighing 198 pounds, all around can also describe his stature. Knight has a great tackling ability and is a very intelligent player. His speed could be questioned at the next level, but I feel like that is something he will be putting in a lot of work to improve moving forward.
Game Performance
Game 1: 6 tackles, 1 Interceptions, and 3 Pass Deflections. Lucas frustrated the hell out of the QB in this game because seemingly any time that he threw in that direction, Lucas was there to make a play.
Game 2: 5 Tackles. Sure there wasn't an interception in this game for Lucas, but maybe that's because the opposing quarterback thought twice before even testing him. I'd say that might be a good idea!
Game 3: 4 Tackles, 1 Pass Deflection. 6+5+4=15 and tied for third on the Blackbirds in tackles. If you ask me, Lucas is just continuing to show that he has the ability to perform at a high caliber in the DSFL. Whether it's making tackles or keeping his guy from catching the ball he's impressive.
Game 4: 8 Tackles, 1 Pass Deflection. This performance by Lucas Knight is beginning to be expected at this point. He had his lowest output in the previous game and made up for it here by doubling his tackles. Great game.
Game 5: 5 Tackles, 1 Forced Fumble, 2 Interceptions, 3 Pass Deflections, 1 Touchdown! Lucas, Lucas, Lucas....man you are just killing it. If you told me that a cornerback will be drafted before Knight in the upcoming DSFL draft, I would slap your momma!
Xerxes Ridley (Zone Corner) @plantane
Another member of the Blackbirds "No Fly Zone", Xerxes Ridley, who comes in a 6'1" and 190 pounds is here to make a name for himself. While being slightly undersized at 190 pounds, the green hair will make sure you know he's coming! Being a zone scheme cornerback could put him into some scheme issues at the next level, but so far as a part of the Blackbirds that has yet to be seen. Sometimes it doesn't really matter what scheme you specialize in if you can just plain ball out! Coming from a run heavy conference in the ACC as a member of the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, Ridley was not tested as much as some of the other corners in the draft, but when he was opposing quarterbacks thought again before throwing the ball in his direction. Ridley has good, not great speed, but he will definitely ruin a passer's night with his catching ability. If you are wondering who that guy is running the other way when your offense is on the field, it's probably Ridley!
Game Performance
Game 1: 7 tackles, 1 Interception, 2 Pass Deflections. Coming up against the run, Ridley made multiple tackles that showed he is not afraid to stick his nose in there and bring down the ball carrier. Like his running mate Lucas Knight, Ridley also pissed off the opposing quarterback by picking him off and slapping down attempts when the ball came his way.
Game 2: 1 Tackle. Not the best performance by Ridley in game 2, but the offensive attack was somewhat run heavy and he wasn't tested much at all in the passing game after his game 1 performance.
Game 3: 4 Tackles, 1 Interception, 1 Pass Deflection. Here in game 3, Ridley got back to more of what we saw from him in game 1. This game also gives him 2 interceptions in 3 games and I've continued to say in this article that if you are able to force turnovers then you are being noticed. I like this guy's game a lot and it was good to see the consistency return.
Game 4: 5 Tackles. Strong and steady performance by Ridley here. Nothing to write home about, but nothing to gloss over either.
Game 5: 2 Tackles, 1 Pass Deflection. Nothing to write home about here, but Ridley is still contributing. While he is a quality corner for sure, I think that his biggest contribution at the next level could come in the return game.
Safety
Walt Green (Center Fielder Safety) @Duilio05
The man who I am dubbing the leader of the "Black Hole", Walt Green, a Boise State product who comes in at 6'1" and 195 pounds is a menace. So far in his young career, Green has created one hell of a name for himself with just his play alone. Currently second on the Blackbirds in tackles, Walt has shown that he can do much more than just cover the top end of the defense. Green is well rounded player with great speed and agility. Strength could be an issue against bigger guys or tight ends, but your definitely not going to burn him on the deep ball! I'm going to make the bold assumption that if Walt Green continues down the path he is currently on then he will be a first round pick in the upcoming DSFL draft!
Game Performance
Game 1: 5 tackles. Holding down the back end of the Blackbird defense, Green contributed 5 tackles and confirmed that he is able to contribute in stopping the run.
Game 2: 8 tackles, 1 Interception, 1 Pass Deflection. This was the game that really put Green on the map in my opinion. Walt was all over the place against the Wolfpack and made their offensive players think twice about coming across the middle.
Game 3: 6 Tackles. With 19 tackles Green is second on the Blackbirds at this point, but I still think that the leader of the "Black Hole" is opening eyes to his ability. He may not have had any deflections or picks in this game, but if you don't think he is on the mind of opposing quarterbacks when the drop back you'd be mistaken.
Game 4: 3 Tackles, 1 Interception, 1 Pass Deflection. The leader of the "Black Hole" had a down game by his standards, at least in the tackle area. However, he did continue his reign of terror on opposing quarterbacks by getting another interception!
Game 5: 3 Tackles. They can't all be all star performances, but they can all be useful. In this game that is what happened with Walt Green. He is still showing the ability to be an all around awesome safety at the next level and I have a ton of faith in his game.
Quentin Sinclair (Playmaker Safety) @MaxGnarland
Mr. Sinclair, the last but not least piece of Area 51 seems to be another diamond in the rough with the DSFL draft right around the corner. The Wisconsin product by way of Long Beach, California (still trying to figure that one out) is a well rounded 6'0" and 210 pounds. He reminds you of the stereotypical prototype strong safety with decent speed, but he does have the ability to be a ball hawk. He has been working on his strength and that will be key moving forward if he doesn't get a little bit faster. Worse case scenario, I think that Sinclair could be a rover type that plays a little linebacker as well ie. Deone Bucannon.
Game Performance
Game 1: 4 Tackles, 1 Interception, 1 Pass Deflection. As I mentioned above, the ball hawk ability is there. Sinclair certainly scares opposing quarterbacks with his ability to cause them to make a mistake and he is also supportive against the run.
Game 2: 2 Tackles, 1 Interception, 1 Pass Deflection. Here is another example where Sinclair is showing to be proficient in covering the passing game. He currently leads the team in interceptions and having the ability to create takeaways is huge when your looking to make a name for yourself at the next level.
Game 3: 3 Tackles, 1 Forced Fumble, 2 Fumble Recoveries. Maybe I upset Quentin by dubbing Walt Green the leader of the "Black Hole" because he decided to show out in this one. Forcing a fumble is one thing, but recovering 2 of them is the big deal here. By himself, Sinclair gave his team 2 extra offensive possessions in this game and that is huge! Great game!
Game 4: 5 Tackles. Another solid performance here by Quentin. His last game was absolutely amazing, so this may seem like a downturn for some, but I have no issue with this performance or anything negative to say about it.
Game 5: 1 Tackle. Lackluster to say the least, but with the linebackers making some many plays in this game, Sinclair got to be a true safety and not have to make very many plays. I think everyone welcomes an easy day at the office every now and then.
Stat Leaders
Tackles: Marquees Acho - 32
Turnovers Created: Lucas Knight - 4 (Over taking this spot from Quentin Sinclair)
