Alright so last time on Dizzy’s Week in Review, I talked about the Solar Bears 0-4 start to the season and my players of the week. This week, well, this might come as a shock to some, but the Solar Bears are officially no longer winless. Oh yeah baby, the Solar Bears have arrived and they are going to be taking names for the rest of the season. We’ve had super good retention of players updating and slowly but surely, we are getting right into the mix of things against the big boys of the conference. We had 4 games over this last week so let’s get right into them and then I will talk about my players of the week at the end of the article.
Regular Season Game 5: Palm Beach Solar Bears @ Tijuana Luchadores
So the Solar Bears headed down for their first game south of the border and it turned out to be a significant one for Palm Beach. Apollo Lange had a breakout game at quarterback for the Solar Bears, completing 17 of 26 passes for 176 yards and a touchdown for a passer rating of 97.6. He also ran the ball 5 times for 36 yards. Havran for Tijuana was equally as impressive at quarterback completing 28 of 38 passes for 248 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions for a passer rating of 90.7. Similarly to Lange, Havran also carried the ball 5 times for 54 yards. Bortboy got the workhorse load of carries for the Solar Bears running 24 times for 111 yards. Bibgy added 52 yards and a touchdown on 9 carries. Gump led the way for the Luchadores running backs with 54 yards and 2 touchdowns on 10 attempts. Tidwell was the star of the Tijuana passing attack catching 7 passes for 76 yards while Rey caught 6 passes for 45 yards. For the Solar Bears, tight end Rood caught 5 passes for 50 yards while Varga caught 4 for 61. Tight end Chase Jensen had the games only receiving touchdown. On defense, the Solar Bears were led by Deon Taylor who had 10 tackles while the Luchadores were led by Cheese Jr who had 9 tackles and a tackle for loss. It came down to the wire, but the Solar Bears were able to pull off their first win of the season and against a division rival no less.
Final Score: Palm Beach Solar Bears 26, Tijuana Luchadores 20
Regular Season Game 6: Kansas City Coyotes @ Palm Beach Solar Bears
Battle of the bottom feeders, the toilet bowl, whatever you want to call it, it was time for the 2 bottom teams in the league to meet for the first time. After his breakout performance against Tijuana, Apollo Lange said to himself “hey I can do even better than that” so he went out and did it. Lange for the Solar Bears completed 18 of 25 passes for 204 yards with 2 touchdowns and an interception for a passer rating of 106.1. Kansas City (at this point in time) was splitting time at quarterback between Jenkins and Leaf Jr. Jenkins completed 17 of 27 passes for 175 yards and a touchdown for a passer rating of 93.9 while Leaf Jr completed 6 of 7 passes for 40 yards and a touchdown good for an eye popping passer rating of 130.1. The Kansas City rushing attack proved to be fairly anemic in this game with Hank leading the way with a 59 yard rush. Taffy gained 24 yards on 6 attempts. Bortboy and Bigby split carries fairly evenly this game and did some serious damage. Bortboy had 86 yards on 17 carries while Bibgy had 140 yards on 16 carries with 2 touchdowns. In terms of receiving, Kansas City was led by Olsen and Nova who had 68 and 61 yards receiving respectively each scoring a touchdown. Palm Beach was lead by Varga and Jensen who had 77 and 74 yards respectively with Varga collecting a touchdown. The Solar Bears were led by Gabagool on defense who collected 8 tackles. The Coyotes were led by C’Bailey who had 9 tackles. This was an extraordinarily close game that came down to the very last drive of the game, but it would be the Kansas City Coyotes who would prevail by an inch.
Final Score: Kansas City Coyotes 34, Palm Beach Solar Bears 31
Regular Season Game 7: Portland Pythons @ Palm Beach Solar Bears
So after playing one of the worst teams in the league… and losing, the Solar Bears had the pleasure of hosting one of the leagues best teams in the Portland Pythons and the Solar Bears did end up losing in this one, they fought valiantly and I believe the game was much closer than the final score. After 2 very solid weeks for Apollo Lange, his nerves got the best of him against a very strong opponent. He completed 12 of 24 passing attempts for 113 yards with a touchdown and an interception for a passer rating of 59.9. Armstrong for the Pythons completed 17 of 29 passing attempts for 206 yards with 2 touchdowns and an interception good for a patter rating of 89.2. Borboy and Bigby once again split carries for the Solar Bears with Bortboy collecting 121 yards on 24 attempts and Bigby collecting 92 yards on 20 attempts. Portland went with a 3 headed rushing attack of NA, Stronglegs, and Smallwood-Chess and 3 collecting around 50 yards with NA and Smallwood-Chess each getting a touchdown. Jensen led the Solar Bears in receiving yards with 43 yards on 4 receptions while Varga collected the Solar Bears only receiving touchdown. Smallwood-Chess and Jones led the way for the Pythons collecting 42 and 71 yards respectively each grabbing a touchdown. The Solar Bears were led by Gabagool who had 9 tackles and a sack and Nikko who had 7 tackles, a sack, and an interception. The Pythons were led by Lee who had 15 tackles, 1 tackle for loss, 2 forced fumbles, and a pass defended. Like I said previously, this was a valiant effort for the Solar Bears, but they got mowed down in the 4th quarter.
Final Score: Portland Pythons 31, Palm Beach Solar Bears 19
Regular Season Game 8: Palm Beach Solar Bears @ Kansas City Coyotes
So in the last game of the week, the Solar Bears sought revenge against their embarrassing loss against the Kansas City Coyotes… and they would get it. Apollo Lange had an efficient day at quarterback completing 13 of 23 passing attempts for 115 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions for a passer rating of 70. Jenkins would go 14 of 27 for 152 yards with 2 touchdowns and an interception for a passer rating of 78 while Leaf Jr would go 7 of 10 for 88 yards for a passer rating of 97.1. The Palm Beach running backs came up huge in this game. Bortboy would go for 156 yards on 19 carries and 2 touchdowns including one for 78 yards. Bigby would go for 165 yards on 18 carries and 2 touchdowns including one for 83 yards. Taffy for the Coyotes would collect 98 yards on 15 attempts. Jensen led the way in terms of receiving for the Solar Bears with 63 yards on 5 receptions. Nova and Taffy would each grab 6 receptions for the Coyotes for 90 and 82 yards with Nova grabbing a touchdown. Hardshaft would lead the way for the Solar Bears on defense with 10 tackles while Lebowski for the Coyotes would get 15 tackles and a tackle for a loss. All-in-all, the Coyotes just could not contain the combo of Bortboy and Bigby in this game as the 2 would collect over 300 yards rushing on under 40 attempts.
Final Score: Palm Beach Solar Bears 27, Kansas City Coyotes 12
This was a big turnaround week for the Solar Bears as they went 2-2 after a disappointing 0-4 week 1. We’re still getting great updates out of our key players both offensively and defensively and we are really excited to keep working towards more and more wins for this season and the future. Next week the Solar Bears will face off against the San Antonio Marshals twice, once at home and once away, and the Tijuana Luchadores and Norfolk Seawolves both at home. Now that we have covered the games from this last week, it’s time to get to Dizzy’s players of the week!
OFFENSIVE PLAYER(S) OF THE WEEK – RB LUDICOLO BIGBY @TheWoZy AND RB BEN BORTBOY @spinarnie
I mean, what can I really say about these guys? Week in and out they are tearing teams up and I really couldn’t pick between the two after their performance against Kansas City in week 8 of the regular season. Are you kidding me? Both run for over 150 yards? Both had 2 touchdowns? Both broke off huge runs? Yeah, they are beasts and I look forward to seeing what both of these guys can do in the remainder of this season and in the future.
DEFNSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – LB TONY GABAGOOL @shipwreckrising
Consistency, consistency consistency. That was the name of the game for Gabagool this week. He led the team in tackling in 2 out of the 4 games and in the 2 games that he wasn’t the leader he was right behind them in second. He got a couple sacks on the week and did everything that we could have hoped for in a starting linebacker. He made the tackles when we needed them and we look forward to more of that from him.
