Jesus Christ. I will be honest with you all. How am I not supposed to pick a Colorado Yeti in some bloody fashion. Granted the majority have been decent since I have been on it but when they drafted me I could pick literally anyone they've damn near ever had past the sole exception of James Bishop. They were inactive, dead and had nothing going for them.
Hell even Wolfie McDummy could really be a contender in mine considering he hasn't ever done anything in play-offs. Albeit taken pretty high into 2nd round. I will just say Lazzy to avoid any toxicity cause it just wouldn't be worth it. Laszlo Forty-Two literally did nothing outside of Minors. Ever. For the Yeti. Now one could argue he was playing under someone past his last career season with them but you're dumb. James was 200 TPE lower than him and for most of the season was beating him in the 2nd position. A red zone threat with only 90 speed is literal garbage in a literal garbage playing position. The Yeti even lost this 3rd overall pick with nothing to show for it. Lazzy never did anything in any play-off game that wasn't an automatic loss position and excluding one season I could argue he should have been nominated for breakout award. Fuck all. Now leading and helping the OL you could argue he is a decent player but until he wins a division bare minimum that does not matter. I for one cannot wait til he recreates. [251 words]
Since I haven't been around for a while I'm going to talk about a very old draft when talking about busts here. J. J. Reigns was the first ever draft pick in the NSFL. Selected 1st overall in the inaugural season of the NSFL J. J. went to the Orange County Otters. Shaka, the user behind Reigns was a seasoned sim league vet, and a big football fan. It seemed like a surefire pick and he was interested in helping manage the team, but after about a month he lost interest and it wasn't much longer before he was inactive. Reigns played for 3 seasons, posting fairly mediocre numbers before no one was really interested in signing him and he ended up being retired. The Otters managed to have some really good seasons early on despite this blunder at 1st overall, they drafted some pro bowl level players late in the draft that made up for that mistake and with some great management they were able to turn things into winning seasons for a long while. Even getting 3 ultimus trophies in a row from S4 to S6. Reigns definitely didn't help the cause but at least they were able to get through it and still be a great team.
I would have to say that the biggest draft bust in NSFL history is Sweet James-Jones. He is a bust for a multitude of reasons. First, SJJ's player was really, not all too amazing. He had sparks of greatness, but never passed 750 yards in a season, and was always behind O'Leary on the depth chart. Secondly, Chicago had to TRADE UP just to get him. You know what they gave up to take a player who lasted 2 seasons in the NSFL? A future 1oa pick, one that Austin would use to grab (at this rate) a future HOF'er Kyle Idleywild. Thirdly, there were other WRs available that were just straight up better than him. My CO-GM, Rayne Gordon, who has passed 800 TPE, was picked by the Wraiths just a pick later than SJJ was, and I think we all know who the better player was. Fourth of all, the pick of SJJ is what sent the entire Chicago franchise into a deep spiral, because, the pick of SJJ is what sent Toasty, their former 2nd round pick and GM, to Arizona, because Toasty and SJJ could not stand each other at all (I have no idea why Toasty would pick SJJ). And finally, SJJ demanded a monster contract from the Butchers, essentially ruining their cap for that season (7.5 mil for one year), and Chicago would fall into the trap multiple times, paying players way more than they are worth, O'Leary 8.5 mil, Beat to a 5 mil extension, etc...

There were many head scratching moments in NSFL draft history and it can't be denied that there were some major busts down the line. But it is a difference to be a bust or just defensive tackle Brayden Ennis. The DSFL draft represented way better his value, as a season before he was drafted in the 5th round to the Kansas City Coyotes. To be fair, the DSFL had only 4 teams drafting at that time, so he was still 18 overall.
Brayden Ennis showed some flashes in the season and was on the more active side, which let his draft stock rise for those who didn't look closely. Over the span of 14 games, Ennis had 28 tackles and only achieved 1 being for loss. In addition to that, he had 1 sack and a forced fumble, which is not that hard to accomplish against a DSFL RB to be fair. So how did he get with this underwhelming performance to 4 overall you may ask? I have no idea. The Baltimore Hawks took a chance on him with their first pick in the S17 draft. Ennis lasted full 9 more picks on the Hawks, before he was traded away. That's one heck of an accomplishment, a bit too late for Baltimore to realize they don't want this colossus on the team. In fact, Ennis don't always make his way on the stat sheet through his defensive performance, he is kind of prone to making dumb penalties. But it is at least a way to make it on the game sheet. After his first season, where he was really underwhelming, it was no surprise his tenure in New Orleans was over. The more surprising part was, that they found a trade partner. Austin took a shot at him. After just one season Austin told him, they are not going to continue his stay. So he had to look for his fourth team in 3 years. In the end, he signed in San Jose, where he played (if you want to call it like that) until S23. He already announced his retirement early this season, to finally make a stop to his career. ![]() ![]()
I see so many posts about Sweet James Jones, it's not even funny anymore. So I'll go with less popular choice. He was also once a promising prospect like others mentioned here that suffered the same fate. Poor Philly. The player I'm talking about is Maxwell Beard. He was a defensive lineman who played for Kansas in minors. By looking at wiki it seems like he indeed was a promising youngster as he also had his own page. So there was little to no surprise Philla has decided to take a chance on his at 5th overall in the S14 draft. His first season was not impressive at all, but the team itself was still on contention so this wasn't a big deal yet. Unfortunately, it didn't become better next season at all. His stats improved just a little bit, but he still was a second/third or whatever fiddle to more skilled teammates. Perhaps this was a reason why he lost any motivation to this game. He stopped to improve his skillset and soon after he decided to retire altogether. The weirdest thing is two days after a retirement, he decided to show up to Philly's offseason training camp. It was too late. It also crippled the team a bit. Since his retirement, they couldn't make the playoffs for a couple of seasons in a row due to prolonged rebuild. Having Maxwell certainly could've helped them to not being in NSFC bottom for too long.
As I am new to the league - I am in my first full season with the Portland Pythons - I had a few difficulties. But i did my research. One player who stood out to me was Oskar Ludvig.
I know there are other players who were a bust, but in my opinion Ludvig was the greatest bust in NSFL history. He was drafted by Colorado in Season 9, which was a challenging time for the team, as they had plans to rebuild the team as the roster was getting quite old. I the draft however they traded up two spots to get Oskar Ludvig as the number 6 OA. He was a top prospect in the draft and they felt, that he could be a cornerstone for the new formed team. The rebuild of the team didn't go very well and they lost the chance to be able to compete for another ultimus. On top of that Ludvig, who they traded up for, went inactive right after the day of the draft. Although he managed to be named to the Pro Bowl once, he never showed his real potential. The main reasons for him to be the greatest bust, is that he had the chance to become a leader for a new formed team, he had the chance to become a legend in Colorado. But by going IA he did real damage to a team, that risked maybe another ultimus to plan ahead but was set back years. Code: 245 words
For this pt I have chosen Maxwell Beard S14 PHI. Beard was the 5th overall pick in the 14th season of the NSFL. Being a pick in the first round typically means you are an exceptional athlete and a promising looking rookie that could not only potentially make a huge impact on the team they are playing for but also impact the league. In general most prospects who enter the league usually want to play in the league for as long as possible but Beard was a very interesting and particular case. Despite being the 5th overall pick beard went inactive right away. This is why scouting can be so important because you can screen athletes that you believe will stay long term and if the Philadelphia liberty had done there scouting properly this could have been avoided by selecting another athlete. On the other hand you truly never know despite doing all the scouting you can potentially do on a player sometimes life throws you a curveball and sometimes you have to call it quits early. I for one cannot speak for Beard but more than likely life just got a hold of him. Eventually Beard would announce his retirement after being inactive for quite a while it was finally official that the s14 5th overall pick was a huge bust.
