Spector makes his first public appearance in over a season. Cameras flash and reporters barrage him with questions.
Marc... Marc... Los Angeles Times. You've been quiet as of late. Is there a reason you've been so reclusive?
Yes.
Care to elaborate?
Sure.
Several seconds pass of dead silence. Again the reporter speaks.
So... tell us why you've been so quiet.
Well. Been thinking about stuff. There's a lot going on in the world. i'm just a football player. I could be doing so much more. When I see we got kids shooting kids in schools, kids starving in our country, kids being torn from their parents at the border. I'm just sick of this crap.
How does that relate to you being so quiet?
I just figure, whatever I got to say about the NSFL, Otters or whatever, it don't mean anything. It ain't important. You know? Thousands of kids are suffering from depression and battling thoughts of suicide. Juvenile Diabetes is on the rise. Whatever happens on this field doesn't matter to the real problems in this country. Unless it makes a difference in the world we live in, everything else is trivial.
A few reporters try to ask questions. One speaks louder than the rest.
What does this mean going forward?
Means I'm gonna be helping. I'm not gonna sit here idly while there's so much going on in this world that's screwed up. I'll donate money and time to help where i can. I'm going to make a difference. Not just as a potential role model on the field, but where it matters. I'm going to the hospitals and visiting children who are afflicted with diseases. I'm going to food pantries with boxes of food and supplies. I'm going to be speaking at schools about gun violence and depression. I'm going to get active. And I encourage all my fellow athletes to follow me in this. We can make a difference.
Spector walks away from the microphone and off stage, leaving the room.
