My favourite childhood pet was a turtle named Bart. I got him when he was newly hatched and couldn't of been bigger than a quarter. He started out living in a tupper ware, with grass, rocks, and water in it. It was amazing watching him grow and seeing his shell develop. When he got to the size of my hand, I moved him into a small terrarium. This time I could get a small pond in there so he could stay wet or dry on the grass/rocks.
A lot of people ask how a turtle can be any fun since they don't really do much, but I loved him. I'd take him to our backyard and let him walk around under the sun. He'd peak at the garden, I'd have his food there and he would just chill outside. He'd love to sit beside me and just relax. Eventually he grew to about 35 pounds and hovered around that. As he got older, and bigger, I noticed that staying in a glass box just wasn't working out. As much as I didn't want to give away my buddy, I had to. I found a wildlife sanctuary that had a great place for him to spend his days. Huge open space, big water beds, and a great spot to sleep. They promised a wonderful life for him and I was thankful for that. I still visit here and there to see how he's doing.
