A short documentary on Kolby Deringer's life features the struggles he and his family have overcome to just be able to live life and thrive in it. From fleeing Katrina and leaving their Louisiana home behind to starting anew across the state, to his junior high injury leaving him out and casting doubt on whether or not he would continue to play, to college and adjusting to the hard knocks of life at the University of Texas, with prestige in football and academics, always rated Top 25 in the preseason polls and a mainstay among the nation's "public Ivies." The documentary pays special attention to his freshman year elbow injury, which left him out at a critical juncture when freshmen showed whether or not they could survive the Longhorn Way.
The documentary hones in on his college days - the struggles of breaking through at Texas, both to get his degree and to try to keep his place on the football team after he broke his elbow early his freshman season. That cast yet another pall on whether he could play and if that injury might have been the one where he was told "focus on your degree because it will be your best way to live the dream." Everyone he talked to was terrified when he returned that season and remained fearful, though finishing out strong proved he could at the very least survive in the high-pressure environs at UT.
