The biggest life-changing event in Bucky Barnes' life probably had to be the decision to leave Penn State University after his junior year to join the NSFL as a part of their developmental league. After a disappointing end to his junior year in which his team lost in the Rose Bowl to Standford, Barnes decided that if he wanted to get a jump on his peers as a professional he needed to do it now. Risking injury in his senior year wasn't something he was interested in doing, even if it did mean putting his degree on hold for the foreseeable future. After talking it over with his coach, his teammates, and family, he knew this was what he wanted and needed to do and entered the DSFL as a waiver pickup at the end of their Season 7. He was selected by the San Antonio Marshals, got some good experience in those final 3 games and was even selected in the DSFL draft to return to San Antonio the following season where he would win multiple awards in his only full season there and be drafted 2nd overall into the NSFL by the Arizona Outlaws. That initial decision to leave school a year early has so far shown to have been a great idea for Barnes both as a football player and financially.
