Season 8 had a very active trade deadline. Philadelphia made the bold decision to basically throw away everything one year after after winning their franchise's first Ultimus trophy. Part of this liquidation gave another team the exact piece they needed to be considered the most complete team in the NSFL. Paul DiMirio.
Paul had been the league's premier TE for several seasons, playing every snap for the Liberty. He was pretty much the face of the franchise. But when the team decided to go their separate ways with the phenomenal game changer, it made waves. New Orleans had moved a pick and some small pieces to the Liberty in exchange for the dynamic game changer. The impact would be immediate, and substantial. In his first game for the Second Line, he would get 105 yards and a TD. The Second Line would finish out the season 5-1 after starting 4-4. While they would not make the Ultimus that year, they set a precedent that they were now the team to beat in the ASFC.
The following season, with a full year of dominance from DiMirio, the Second Line had their best season ever. They finished the regular season 12-2, and hoisted their first Ultimus trophy. While it takes more than one man to be the reason a team wins, the DiMirio trade could definitely be pointed to as the final puzzle piece that got New Orleans over that proverbial hump.
