At the beginning of the season, the SaberCats pulled off a big trade involving quarterbacks. They traded Brad Pennington to the Wraiths for Mat Akselsen. It was a surprising trade because Akselsen was a staple behind centre for the Wraiths and Pennington was supposed to be the future for San Jose. Circumstances changed and we had a shake up.
With some history in Yellowknife, it was very different for Akselen to play against them. He told us as much in the locker room before the first meeting in week 4. It was his return to Yellowknife and while we put up a fight, we couldn't get him the win. After that game, everyone in the locker room circled the week 11 match up at home against the Wraiths. We promised each other that we'd get that win for Mat.
Week 11 arrived and pre-game, we were hyped. We rallied around him and told him we're getting this W. The game started and we were fired up. It seemed like everyone was having the game of their lives. Our defense had arguably their best game of the season, limiting Yellowknife to 20 points. On offense, Akselen crushed it. He threw for 288 yards and 4 touchdowns, leading us to the huge 42-20 victory. When the final whistle sounded, we saw the look on his face. He wanted that win and everyone in the locker room were so happy to get it for him.
