The Yellowknife Wraiths failed to make the playoffs despite carrying a better record than the ASFC’s Orange County Otters, who did make the playoffs. The Wraiths are victims of a tough NSFC, and a league that lacks a wild card, because they were one of the top teams this season despite their position. Meanwhile the Otters limped into the playoffs as a struggling team, and couldn’t offer much challenge to the strong NOLA team. The Wraiths absolutely destroyed the Otters in both regular season matchups, and they also split the season matchup with NOLA. There’s a lot of evidence that Yellowknife was more deserving of the Otters playoff spot, and perhaps it is time the league took a look at introducing a wild card in the future. The Yellowknife Wraiths would most certainly advocate for the introduction of one, but unfortunately for them it couldn’t work retroactively. Imagine if we had the chance to see Yellowknife vs Orange County to decide who got the 4th playoff spot. This method gives assurance that the best teams will be in the playoffs, and the best teams will be competing for the Ultimus! Maybe next season we’ll see a wild card, but then again, the league may have already considered this option unappealing.
