After the abrupt retirement of Elijah Lagerfield, there was a big hole at running back for the San Jose SaberCats. At such an important decision, the general managers needed to bring in an impact player who was ready for the long haul. That player also needed to fit into the timeline of the rest of the team, young, but getting better every day. Cue Jerrod Canton.
The SaberCats entered the Season 11 NSFL Entry Draft with no picks in the first two rounds. Sitting nervously as they watched players come off the board, they held their breath that Canton would be there at the 18th pick. To the general managers good fortune, he was there at the pick and they snatched him up. Since there was an immediate hole at running back this season, Canton was not going to be sent back down to the DSFL, and would instead take the starting job right away.
The reason I see Canton becoming a breakout star is because of his work ethic and because of the position he is being placed in. Last season, Lagerfield finished 5th in league rushing and he wasn't really training hard. However, because of the heavy workload he got, he racked up the yards. This season, the SaberCats are going to lean on Canton to be a work horse, which bodes well for his yardage. What makes him a breakout candidate is Canton is getting better every day. He's going to keep working and soon enough he's going to tearing up opposing defences. Watch out for Canton to be in the rookie of the year conversation and keep track of his career, because he has all the makings of a star running back.
