Chad Pennington has been off to an impressive hot start in Season 11 for the Yellowknife Wraiths. Already one of the top tacklers in the league, Pennington has rounded out his defensive game to be a true threat in every phase of the defense, and the stats through four games reflect that.
Everybody knows about Pennington’s ability to tackle at the second level of the defense. He was third in tackles last season (121), and surprisingly wasn’t even the leading tackler on Yellowknife. Some new blood, such as Arizona rookie Alexander Selich, has moved Pennington down the tackle leaderboard, but he remains second at Yellowknife with 26 tackles in four games.
However, other areas of Pennington’s defense have vastly improved. Pennington is tied for the league league with five sacks, as he’s putting more pressure on quarterbacks. Pennington is also tied for fifth in the NSFL with seven passes defended, representing improved play as a coverage linebacker.
That well-rounded defense was pivotal for Yellowknife in their first win of the season, a 41-31 win over the New Orleans Second Line. Snapping a two-game skid to open the season against the defending ASFC champions, Pennington had seven tackles, a sack, and two passes deflected.
