POST-GAME: ASFC Conference Championship
It’s safe to say that the ASFC Conference Championship was a pretty big upset. Although both the Orange County Otters and the San Jose SaberCats finished with the league’s two best records, and the teams traded victories in the regular season, the SaberCats were widely viewed as the superior and more consistent team. With a 12-2 record, the number one scoring offense and defense, the best point differential in the league, and a home field advantage throughout the playoffs, the stage was set for the SaberCats to take home their first Ultimus Trophy. But the ASFC Championship told a different story.
The SaberCats took an early 7-0 lead in the first quarter on a beautiful 29 yard TD pass from Joliet Christ to Kazimir Oles, the only passing touchdown for the SaberCats on the day. The Otters battled back in the second quarter to tie the game up 14-14 at halftime, including the first of two rushing touchdowns from Offensive Player of the Game Ricky Adams. In the second half, the Otters blew the doors open on the SaberCats. The home team was outscored 17-7, with the Otters putting up three field goals from kicker Adam Anderson and another touchdown from Ricky Adams with a two-point conversion on top to put the game out of reach. At the end of the day, the Otters prevailed 31-21 and moved on to the Ultimus Bowl, while the SaberCats ended their third ever playoff season with a third semifinal loss to the Orange County Otters.
QB MATCHUP: Adriana Falconi vs. Micycle McCormick
The QB matchup between the Philadelphia Liberty’s Adriana Falconi and the Colorado Yeti’s Micycle McCormick was a true shootout. The quarterbacks combined for 6 touchdowns and 7 interceptions in the high scoring semifinal, which saw the Yeti prevail 50-27. In many respects the two quarterbacks posted near identical statistics; Falconi’s 20/37 attempts for 248 yards is not dissimilar from the 23/37, 230 yards that was put up by McCormick. However, one crucial difference separates the 53.5 quarterback rating of Falconi from the 93.3 rating and Offensive Player of the Game performance that McCormick put up: touchdowns and interceptions.
McCormick came out of the gate guns blazing, passing for two touchdowns in the first quarter and two more across the second and third quarters. In addition, the Offensive POG led his team on methodical drives that converted 7 of 8 third downs and set up three more rushing touchdowns for the Yetis. Despite two interceptions, McCormick’s performance overall was stellar. Falconi, however, had a miserable day of turnovers. She threw a touchdown pass in the first and fourth quarters, but had five passes intercepted by the staunch Liberty defense. Falconi’s offense only converted 5 of 10 third downs and frequently stalled, allowing the Yetis to build up a monster lead and put the game out of reach. McCormick now advances to the Ultimus Bowl with a chance to add a championship to his legacy.
GOING TO DISNEYLAND!: Stephen Harris Jr.
The Ultimini MVP for this year’s DSFL playoffs has to be Stephen Harris Jr., the place kicker and punter for the S13 Ultimini Champions, the Tijuana Luchadores. In addition to averaging 47 yards a punt on his four punts, Harris also nailed all three extra point attempts and all three field goal attempts, including a 53-yarder, a 29-yarder, and the 35-yard field goal that gave the Luchadores the 30-27 victory in overtime. For his trip to Disneyland, Harris first decided to ride many of the classic attractions from the original park, including the Matterhorn Bobsleds, Peter Pan’s Flight, Splash Mountain, and Pirates of the Caribbean. He then hopped over to Disney’s California Adventure, where Harris enjoyed newer rides like Radiator Springs Racers, Soarin’ Around the World, Guardians of the Galaxy Mission: Breakout!, and the rebranded Pixar Pier. Harris especially enjoyed seeing the incredible theming of many of the lands like Frontierland or New Orleans Square, and his favorite attraction was the Haunted Mansion. Harris is excited to visit the park again in the future, hopefully once Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge opens to the public, and hopes to find more success in the future after he is selected in the S14 NSFL Draft.
UNSUNG HERO: Corwin Davenport
Although the Kansas City Coyotes would end up falling short to the Tijuana Luchadores in the DSFL championship, I think that the Coyotes running back Corwin Davenport deserves to be called the unsung hero of the playoffs. Davenport shined in both games of the playoffs. In the NFC conference championship round against the Portland Pythons, Davenport rushed for 103 yards on 21 carries, averaging 4.9 yards per carry, and contributed an additional catch for 17 yards. Davenport’s 3 yard touchdown run in the beginning of the third quarter helped the Coyotes take back the lead from the Pythons, and his consistent production helped his team move the chains, keep drives alive, and eventually survive the slugfest 21-10. In the Ultimini game against the Tijuana Luchadores, Davenport exploded for 152 rushing yards and a touchdown off of 22 carries, averaging an astounding 6.9 yards per carry. He punched in a score once again in the third quarter after being down 24-7 at halftime, and jumpstarted the Coyotes’ comeback that forced the game into overtime. In a crucial overtime drive, Davenport would get stuffed on a second and ten that would eventually lead to the Luchadores getting the ball and scoring the game winning field goal. But overall, Davenport was the major factor in the Coyotes’ playoff success and deserves recognition.
