I was coming off a fantastic rookie season in the DSFL. We, the Tijuana Luchadores, had won the Ultimini Championship Game and at the awards ceremony, I won DSFL Wide Receiver of the Year. I definitely think ending my season on such a high put me firmly on the NSFL teams' radars.
I was contacted by several teams before draft day, but still didn't have a feel for when my name would be called. After weeks of interviews, it was finally draft day. I decided to attend the draft with my Mom and Dad, but I also had a watch party back home in Hamilton with all my friends and family. They really wanted to show me support and I was very grateful for that. As my family and I took our seats in the green room, they asked me when I thought I would hear my name called. I told them I really didn't know, but was hopeful that it would be somewhere in the first round. With about 5 minutes before the start of the draft, my phone rang. I stepped away from the table and answered the phone to the voice of the SaberCats general manager. We had a little small talk when he asked me if I wanted to move to San Jose. I was so excited I could barely control myself. I told him that it would be an honour to play for the SaberCats. We exchanged thank yous and I hung up and went back to my table. I tried to keep a straight face, but man it was tough.
The draft officially began and the SaberCats walked up to the podium to announce the first overall pick. I'll remember these words forever. "With the first overall pick in the Season 9 NSFL Entry Draft, the San Jose SaberCats are proud to select wide receiver Xavier Flash." My parents jumped out of their seats and we embraced. All that hard work that we put it had payed off. They showed a lve stream of the watch party back home and they were going nuts as well. I walked up the stage, put on my SaberCats hat, and was officially a member of the NSFL and the San Jose SaberCats. That was one of the best days of my life and I'll never forget it.
