I remember being with my dad when he was drafted to the NSFL. We weren't at the draft, we were at home. He didn't expect to be picked high up very far and by the time it got to the 9th round, he seemed kind of nervous. But in the end, he was picked in the 10th round by a team he'd spend the rest of his career with.

Coming into this draft, I knew all of the GMs already. I'd grown up around this league, I'd met everyone while my dad was still making the rounds as a coach. I knew who would draft me. I talked to her plenty of times in the lead-up to the draft. I felt lucky. I didn't have the anxiety my dad felt about being drafted, I knew where I was going. I sat there with my parents and my girlfriend and watched as the draft started. I knew I was getting called early, so I made sure to dress up as best I could.

The time had come and I saw the commissioner go up to the stage. I started getting ready to stand up.
He gets to the podium... and he says the wrong name.
It wasn't mine.
All those talks I had with that GM: Meaningless.
My dreams of being a top draft pick: Gone
