I'm a rookie and this is my first attempt at anything like this. Be gentle please! Jokes aside let me know if anything is wrong with this and I'll edit it. Being new here, I had to rely heavily on the index to get this done because I'm not yet familiar with the teams and the players. Coming in at the end of the playoffs didn't help either, but I hope I made it satisfactory enough!
Edit: Found out Falconi is in fact not a 'he'. Attempted to change all gender references to feemale!
1) Playoff Predictions
The Ultimus finals has led to a match-up between two teams that are stylistically different. On one side you have a prolific air raid team led by QB A. Falconi of the Philadelphia Liberty and hiseroutstanding receiving threats across the board. On the other side, you have a ground and pound running game led by star RB S. Shady of the Arizona Outlaws and his elite offensive line. I feel like the Outlaws style matches up well against the Liberty. Philadelphia seems to have a weak interior filled with young players and average guys who struggle to plug holes. Their lone standout in the middle seems to be R. Harshaft, but he won't be able to stop this running game alone. Someone else will need to step up in the middle or Arizona's monstrous guards are going to have a field day, opening lanes you could drive buses through for Shady. That said, Falconi will also need to have a big day to get the win for Philadelphia. She's facing an above average pass rush and a secondary that has only a few holes. Falconi has enough weapons that she should be able to abuse Arizona's weaker side of the field, but this is an offense that is founded on the big play down the field. To give her receivers time to get open, Philadelphia's offensive line will have to dominate the line of scrimmage and potentially double team M. Spector who had a sack and a forced fumble a week ago.
At the end of the day, I think Arizona takes this one. I think their strengths outweigh their weaknesses and it'll take a heroic effort by Falconi to give Philadelphia a chance at this one. I have the Outlaws winning 31-24. I feel like Arizona will rack up over 250 rushing yards by the end of the game, taking time and drives away from Falconi while wearing down Philadelphia's interior. It should be a slow and methodical approach by Arizona and Philadelphia will have their chances, but I don't think they'll have enough of them.
3) All about the QBs
The Outlaws vs Liberty match-up has two highly touted quarterbacks competing against each other for a championship. You have Reese against Falconi and I think on paper the two match up very well as the cream of the crop in the NSFL. The two have entirely different supporting cast though, which makes the match-up harder to diagnose. Reese and the Outlaws focus much more on their elite run game, which stacks the box with defenders and gives Reese the opportunity to abuse the edges of the field. He doesn't have many elite options out there, but thanks to consistent single coverage he doesn't need them to be elite. He can pick and chose his targets off the play-action with his elite accuracy and put the ball where only they can catch it. Falconi and the Liberty on the other hand have a truly elite passing game. They have weapons all over the field with the likes of von Matt, Varga, and Brannigan. They are speedy and great down the field, allowing Falconi to show off her arm strength and really get down the field. This is an offense that relies on their elite QB to pick up chunk plays and move them quickly.
Both QBs have a ton of potential and upside, but in a direct comparison I think I have to give the title to Falconi. Without Falconi, the Liberty's offense falls apart. They need her to make plays, they need her to be alert, and they need her to not turn the ball over to succeed. Reese has the advantage of a strong running game for a pressure relief valve if he has an off day or just isn't seeing openings in the secondary. Falconi has to be consistently elite for her team to succeed.
4) Head to Head Matchups
In the championship game, you have an intrigue match-up between the Liberty and the Outlaws. You have L. Knight, the Outlaw's best cover man, matching up against J. von Matt, the prolific pass catcher from the Liberty. Knight has been a consistently good corner for the entirety of the season and is coming off of a rather elite game where he recorded 13 tackles and an INT. Knight's blazing speed make him uniquely fitted for covering a receiver of von Matt's caliber. He's great at making up distance and is rarely beat off the line. He may be one of the elite man to man corners in the game and this week he'll have a chance to prove it against one of the top pass catchers the NSFL has to offer. Von Matt has big play capabilities and is one of the fastest guys in the league. He has elite hands and agility, allowing him to make quick cuts in routes to create separation. He's going up against an intelligent player on the other side who may be able to read and predict him though. He comes off a game where he was able to flash his deep routes, averaging 22 yards a catch. In this game though, the longer the play develops, the more time von Matt's opposition will be able to predict his movements and possibly jump in for a clutch interception.
Von Matt has the potential to runaway with this game. If he can get Knight to check up on a route or two, he could have a huge game and lead the Liberty to victory. Knight is a smart corner though and if he spend time in the film room learning von Matt's routes, he has the speed and the ability to keep this monster in check. This should be one of the more fascinating match-ups in the final game of the season and could very well be the one that decides the Ultimus champion and potential finals MVP.
19) The Big Fellas
The more I look at the game of the Outlaws vs the Liberty, the more I think about the trenches and how they will impact this game. In a game that features a high powered passing game and a near elite running game, the defensive line will be more important than ever. When you look at Arizona you see a strong core with DE Marchand, DT Morris, and DE Spector and some pass rushing depth at DE. Going up against a QB like Falconi, the pass rush will be essential. They'll need their guys flying off the edge to rush Flaconi into decisions. Their opposition feasts off of big plays, always looking for those 20 yard chunks. It will be on this defensive line to not give Falconi that chance. The big guys are even more important for the Liberty. You have a big, elite offensive line with one of the better backs in the NSFL on the other side. The Outlaws feast when their run game gets going and the only thing between Shady and a big day in the championship game is this defensive line. They have a pair of good edge rushers in Philadelphia, but their interior is lack luster. Neither of the DTs on their roster really inspires fear in the opposing line. Philadelphia will need someone to step up in that line or Arizona's guards are going to have a fun day.
I fully believe that Arizona's defensive line are going to have a bigger day and more overall impact. Their ability to get after the passer and force turnovers will be instrumental in a close game. That said if someone steps up, Philadelphia's line has to potential to be more impactful. The Outlaws rely on their running game and if they are forced to be one dimensional, it could change the entire outlook of this game.
