4) Head to Head Matchups Portland’s WR Hugh Mongo vs Tijuana’s CB Jordan Andrews
This time, the Ultimini brings an interesting matchup between the 2 best teams of the DSFL season 16. Among all the possible matchups, one that could have a great impact on the score is between Pythons WR Hugh Mongo and Luchadores CB Jordan Andrews. Let's give a brief look into season stats for both players.
Mongo was one of the best wide receivers of the season and he’s certainly on his way to earn the wide receiver of the year award, finishing with a total of 1117 yards, 15.1 ypc and 5 touchdowns; he was a reliable option for QB Armstrong for most of the games and just to make a quick comparison, the 2nd place WR ended up with 985 yards. What's more important, he showed up during Portland’s playoff win over Kansas City with a performance of 5 receptions, 54 yards and 1 touchdown.
Jordan Andrews had a great season as the number one corner for TIjuana with 74 tackles, 1 tackle for loss, 1 forced fumble, 11 passes defended and 2 interceptions. He should be one strong candidate for the defensive back of the year award. During the playoff game against San Antonio, Andrews did have a good game with 4 tackles and 1 interception during the 4th quarter which turned into a field goal. It's going to be very important for Andrews to press as much as he can Mongo and limit his targets, because doing so will surely give a hard time to the Pythons offense; regardless of the outcome, this matchup is going to be one of the highlights of the Ultimini.
5) Spotlight on Youth (S15 edition): CB Emondov Emoji
With a class as big as the S15 group, one is able to find many great players on almost any position. So my choice for taking the spotlight will be Philadelphia Liberty’s Emondov Emoji who’s turning out to be the top corner of this class. During season 16 and the playoffs, much of the attention went towards his teammate safety Richard D’Attoria V because of all the big plays he had in key moments of games; nonetheless, Emoji proved all season long he's able to shutdown any of the top wide receivers of the league by placing first on the most passes deflected with 26. He also finished with 60 tackles, 3 interceptions and 1 touchdown.
Now looking into the playoffs, he recorded a total of 8 tackles and 3 passes defended between the two games before the Ultimus. Considering the team was playing on the road and he had to limit the likes of Parker, Swift and Oles, his ended up with a good performance that allowed the offense to go off when most needed. Against Arizona in the Ultimus, he had one task to accomplish: make fellow S15 draftee Brock Landers as irrelevant as possible; and he managed by having 5 tackles and forcing Landers to post only 3 catches and 36 yards . Unfortunately for his team, they couldn't make the comeback on the last minutes of the game and Liberty lost the championship. In spite of this, be on the lookout for Emoji because with the way he has been playing the last 2 seasons, I feel he's going to become an elite cornerback sooner rather than later.
10) Rivalries
The Orange County Otters were the top team of the ASFC during season 16 and everyone thought they were going to add another Ultimus trophy to their collection. I mean, they have arguably the best offense of the division with QB Showbiz running for MVP, WR Valentine becoming the #1 of the league and Sunnycurse having his back, plus a great running game with RB Reed. Also, don't forget their defense that has great players like DT Skarsgard, DT Lattimer S Brown and Schneider, as well as rookie revelation LB Grievous who did a little of everything between tackles, sacks and passes deflected.
Even though the team earned their favorite status, they went on to lose the conference championship with home field advantage against the Outlaws; the worst thing was that they only managed to score 3 points, plus a -3 turnover differential. It's unthinkable to be a dominant force all season long and then go out with an awful performance, that's why the Otters are overrated. It will be interesting to see what happens next season with the team, between free agent departures and if they can build their confidence back after a terrible loss; and not just for the regular season games, they need to prove again they are able to win the big games too.
19) The Big Fellas: Arizona’s DL
Part of Arizona's success for going all the way from the wildcard game up to the Ultimus comes from the consistent play of their defense. There, outside of soon to be named LBOTY Raymond Vans, the Dline had a lot to contribute for closing games and helping the team make some comebacks. DT Ricardo Morris and DE Marc Spector were a reliable pair all season long with combined stats of 81 tackles, 13 tackles for loss, 1 forced fumble and 15 sacks.
Now if we look into their playoff performances, both had a significant play in the two games. First against San Jose, Spector had a tackle for loss during the 4th quarter that ended up in a turnover on downs for the Sabercats. For the second game against Orange County, both linemen had a sack during the 3rd quarter; Morris on a 2nd and 1 drive that ended in a punt and Spector on a 3rd and 8. In addition, Spector had a forced fumble and recovery which prevented an Otters score in the 1st quarter. Concerning the Ultimus, their contributions weren’t as notable as past games with a total of 4 tackles and a forced fumble from Morris which happened in the 4th quarter on the last drive for the Liberty that unfortunately for the Outlaws he couldn't recover. This unit will continue to be a key part for Arizona's defensive performances in the upcoming seasons and they can count on young Morris and an experienced Spector to deliver good plays when most needed.
