I don't believe a good team is necessary for building faith among players. As long as they can trust the management of the team, I see little reason why you can't retain most of your players with a plan. It's like a business (team plan, drafting, FA signings, etc.) you're selling to investors (the players). I think this is an important lesson that any future GM can learn from, or current GMs can improve on. I think it's a poorly made assumption that the mentality of leaving in free agency/trades due to a team not being successful at the time is that common. When players start losing faith in the management, when the locker room isn't as active as it should be, and when contract disputes start popping up, that's when you lose the team, and the players. All of the sudden people want out, and it's not because your team isn't winning. Rebuilds are possible, but no one's saying it's easy. Just my dos centavos.
