Written option: Life is made up of choices. What choice did your player make that led them to the ISFL? What would their life be like if they never pursued a career in football? What would they be doing for a living?
When Patey first joined the family retail business, he had never played football or really any sport as a teenager. Although he had a great build to be a successful athlete, he was destined to be the successor of the family grocery store business even though his high school coaches were trying to recruit him for most sports. Living on the island, there really wasn't many successful athletes that made it off the island. When Patey graduated high school, he had to make the decision of working full time at the family business or moving away to UoT, which he ended up deciding to pursue. Once he got to the 'big city' he decided to pursue a life he never really had living back home on the island. He joined lots of different clubs and sports, and one of those was football. Patey knew none of the rules but was eager and determined to learn no matter what since his coaches had stated he was naturally gifted from the tryout he had with the team.
Once working his way onto the team, he quickly developed into one of the best receivers on the team. During the beginning of each summer throughout his 4 year degree, he spent time back on the island training while working at the family business until training camp started back up in August. As a Canadian kid, once Patey had graduated, he had entered himself into the CFL draft, projected as a late round pick from a not so prestigious football school. When the draft had concluded, Patey's name was not called by any of the teams, which caused him to make the biggest decision of his life, enter the ISFL on waivers or the family business.
Once discussing it with his family, they figured this was still as amazing opportunity for the young man to make a name for himself moving forward. Although the family business may suffer, Patey's football career may not even be a long one as most waivered players are. Would you rather pursue your dreams? Or work at family run grocery store stocking shelves, placing orders, deal with customers etc..? This was an easy decision for Patey, who would not miss out on taking the chance of a lifetime by joining one of the most prestigious leagues in the world, the ISFL. (391 words)
