The importance of a backup plan to professional football had never been lost on Peter "Petey" Patterson. After his father Zane spent his college days as a star player for the University of Minnesota, an ACL tear led to him falling out of the draft and never being able to put together a career in football as he once imagined he might. While Petey's pro prospects also seemed promising, his father's experience and the lessons he learned from it growing up meant that he was always dedicated to applying himself in academics as well and taking full advantage of the opportunities given to him by the sport he loved.
With this in mind, Petey took full advantage of his redshirt year at the University of Iowa to take a variety of courses and decide upon a course of study that could be useful if his football dreams didn't pan out. After discovering an enjoyment of physics and engineering, which he credits to using the same spatial thinking as he relies upon in coverage on the football field, he decided to pursue a degree in mechanical engineering. While his completed degree was never put to use as he instead declared for the DSFL draft, in the event of any unfortunate incidents Petey should have been able to have a solid career as a mechanical engineer.
