During his time at Rice University, a lot of his team mates wanted to join the NFL. Some actually did. Scouts from many NFL teams came to watch pro days and games. Several of them took interest in Marc Spector.
First team that approached Spector was the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Secondary has been a pressing need for this team for quite some time. Marc made it clear that he had his eyes set on the NSFL, though. This was enough to send the Tampa scout elsewhere.
Once word got out that Marc wasn't really interested in the NFL, most scouts passed on Spector. Still, 2 more came his way. The New York Jets were looking for a local kid and a cornerback, and Spector being from New Rochelle fit that bill. Marc tried to tell them he was not interested in the NFL but they asked "What if we drafted you anyway?" Marc paused and replied "I would rather go work for my father in his mail room for 12 dollars an hour than to have any official association with your terrible franchise. If you draft me I will do everything in my power to make your team, ownership and coaches to look as bad as possible. Don't you dare crush my dreams like that."
The only NFL team Spector would consider playing for would be the Pittsburgh Steelers, but they never looked his way.
