This offseason, Liberty linebacker elected to go against the grain and take a step back from football. Last off-season Hackett lived on the practice field and the results weren't as a positive as expected. Despite posting a career-high in sacks, he fell off his tackle pace en route to being a Pro Bowl snub for the second consecutive year. Whether the diminished results were fluke or a result of genuine burnout is a question lost to history, but Hackett doesn't want to make the same mistake twice. Of course, he's keeping in shape and making sure to improve his game but, broadly speaking, this summer was spent getting his mind right.
Following the Liberty's defeat at the hands of the Baltimore Hawks, Hackett decided that before he could get better as a football player, he had to make sure everything was taken care of off the field. The hours put in in the gym took time away from his writing , so a major offseason goal was starting a short-story anthology he'd been meaning to write for ages. He also decided to double down on spending time with those closest to him. The circle got smaller, but the bonds within it were tightened. In that same spirit, he also spent alot of time just hanging out with his Liberty teammates. Despite the reputation as an unloyal contract-chaser, Hackett understands the value of chemistry, especially in a unit packed with as much potential as the Liberty's defense.
