Before Eli Kamaka declared for the S3 draft, he had a significant decision to make after graduation from University of Oregon. He knew that he hadn’t been scouted heavily by any teams in the NSFL and wasn’t getting much attention from the media despite having a decent performance as a defensive end for one of Oregon’s best teams in the PAC-12. Eli received an offer from a local newspaper to write for their sports section and it was an offer that Eli was content with since it gave him the chance to be involved in sports, stay close to home, and apply his English degree. It was a late night call from his former coach at Oregon that changed the course of his life forever.
Coach Brown and Eli had a heart to heart about his plans for the future and his indecisiveness as to upcoming the NSFL draft. Coach Brown eventually convinced Eli to give the NSFL a try. Had Eli not picked up the phone that night, he would have packed his bags the next day and flown home to Hawaii to start looking for an apartment. The ticket had already been booked and he already verbally agreed to work for the Honolulu Star the previous day. If not for Coach Brown and his call, Eli’s future would be completely different.
