For Eric Kennedy, the biggest close call of them all came down to the first one that mattered, the decision by the Wraiths to draft him on S2 Draft Day. Kennedy had failed to impress as a prospect, quickly getting forgotten among the stand-out Running Backs of the S2 draft class. Unfamiliarity with the league had led to confusion and a growing disinterest. Kennedy’s time in the league seemed destined to become a short journey. By all likelihood, failure to get drafted would have left him on the waivers and with no one around to peak his interest, his inactivity would have only gotten worse. Instead, in the 12th round, Spike Crown took a chance. He saw a spot for this inactive Running Back and chose to give him a chance as a Full Back. It was a small role with little fanfare, but it was a chance, which was more than any other team would give him. Though the role was small, Kennedy’s new teammates in Yellowknife embraced him and took him under their wing, offering advice and guidance to help him navigate the obstacles of the league. They sparked something in him that had not been there before. Even star RB Bubba Nuck took to Kennedy, inspiring the Full Back that would go on to block for him over the next few seasons. That inspiration was so strong that it pushed Kennedy to not only become more active, but even come to rival Nuck himself, recently passing up the former MVP in TPE. However, it all came down to one decision. It’s unlikely the NSFL will see another 12-round draft. Had the draft not gone on so long and had the Wraiths had taken that chance on a long shot inactive, the story would have never been told. Shout-out to Spike Crown and Yellowknife for taking a chance and guiding a lost rookie to the right path.
