Life has been pretty good for Eric Kennedy lately. Admittedly, though, it hasn’t always been that way. After a disappointing performance in the S2 prospect games, he was drafted as an afterthought and put into an easily forgettable role at Fullback. He had a great team around him, but the bar was high. He found himself alongside S1 MVP Bubba Nuck, who he would have to somehow replace if he ever hoped to achieve his goal of starting as the team’s Running Back. He worked on his receiving skills to help stand out elsewhere, but he was still on the field with superstar receivers Josh Garden and Bailey Cook as well as the GOAT Tight End Ricky Maddox. He was a man walking among giants. It was a privilege to play along such great athletes, but Kennedy came from a featured role during his college days at LSU and giving up the spotlight is a tough task for anyone.
It’s no wonder drama quickly unfolded over Kennedy’s first term with Yellowknife. Rumors of jealousy toward Bubba Nuck came out rather early. He had already earned himself a bad reputation in prospect camp and these allegations played right into that. Word was going around in some circles toward the end of S2 that even Wraiths Quarterback Chris Orosz was unhappy with the aspiring Running Back and had chosen to avoid looking his way during parts of the season. Kennedy worked to clean up his reputation, but made a crucial mistake toward the end of S3 as he revealed that his feelings toward Nuck were still an issue and that he was contemplating moving to Free Agency to chase the starting role “he deserved”.
It took a while for that drama to blow over, but Kennedy’s managed to keep his hands clean as of late, mostly by avoiding saying anything at all in public. He closed his blog and let his work on the field do the talking. He’s signed an extension with the team and, after a conversation with Wraths’ owner Spike Crown, he moved into a committee role with Nuck, allowing both men to stand on their own merit. He also serves as a receiver when he’s not locked into an RB1 role, keeping him involved in all aspects of the team’s offense. He’s become a “Jack of All Trades” and it’s made him absolutely vital to the team as many of his teammates moved onto other teams or into new roles. Experts expect Kennedy to have his best season yet ahead. Let’s hope that he continues to keep his mouth shut and stays out of trouble.
