(S9) - PT 3 - Past Events

I’m sure some of my former teammates will talk about this as well, but for me a historic moment that resonates with me the most is of course Philadelphia’s Ultimus win. When I came into the league in S2 and was drafted by Philly, our locker room and really the league as a whole was popping. We had just expanded to more teams and there was a big draft class again, but we on the Liberty really thought we had what it took to eventually win it all and it was a great group of guys to play with for so long. We worked our butts off and unfortunately in our time of peak activity we still couldn’t make it over the hump. We lost some of our best people, including myself, to bouts of inactivity, but I’m glad that I made it back to witness it all coming together thanks in big part to some of our most dedicated people like Oles and PDX. It was the first time and NSFC team won it all and as an expansion team that everyone doubted from its inception, it was that much sweeter. Even though I was lucky enough to win one next season with the Wraiths, nothing will match what that first one mean, both in terms of the league and in the memories that were made on the way.

Back in the Season 2 NSFC championship game, we saw some controversy. Up and coming Hawks linebacker, Erasmo Broadway had initially tested positive for performance enhancing drugs following a random drug test following the game. Broadway contested that he had been prescribed medication for a sore knee the week prior and that it must have contained a banned substance. Whatever the case, no punishment was handed down and the Hawks’ 16-14 victory stood. Further evidence that these allegations were not true came in the stat sheet where Broadway only accounted for 4 tackles the whole game. By comparison, he had averaged over eight tackles per game throughout the season along with 12 sacks, three interceptions, 13 pass deflections, and one safety so to say he underperformed would be an understatement.

(For anyone who doesn’t know, Broadway’s Agility was set to 100 in the sim after 775 was entered instead of 75. It was decided that this error had very little impact on the game and no re-sim or punishment was needed. However, this did not stop the Baltimore witch hunt considering the other “controversies” surrounding the team. It was all for naught, though, as the Hawks got stomped in the title game anyway.)

What to write about? There have been many happenings in the NSFL the past year plus. I guess I'll write about the OL bots and how it changed the landscape for the NSFL.

Back before S4 we only had regular bots and users as OL, as such it was a very in demand position. Many of the best players in the league were actually OL, Winchester, Jogn, Akselsen, Blocksdale, Hendrix, Pest (Er), Sharpei, Sandoval, Clegane. However with five spots on the OL for eight teams even that bevy of stars couldn't hold the fort for long.

@timeconsumer then made a post about fixing the offensive line and the dearth of users that were making them. It was co-signed by basically all of the active OL.

Well HO listened, and they actually came up with the solution we have today. Now everyone actually has a competent starting OL and can focus on other areas of the team.

This isn't where the story ends though, as the free 100% TPE redistribution for OL caused a seismic shift across the NSFL landscape.

Akselsen swapped to QB, enabling the trade of Orosz to SJS, which caused Ethan Hunt to go unsigned forcing a swap to WR.
Sharpei swapped to LB, SJS was still bad but he was a good tackler.
Blocksdale swapped to QB, forcing scrub Kyubee to become a safety. Blocksdale as QB elevated the Hawks to a much higher plane of NSFL existence.
Winchester swapped to LB and Clegane to DT, jumpstarting the Otters defensive dominance for seasons to come.
Hendrix swapped to LB, helping Liberty improve and become competitive.
Jogn switched to safety, giving the Wraiths a small boost there.
Sandoval switched to DT, further helping the Hawks become contenders.

Many of these players are now older and on their way out or already retired, but the impact of their position swaps cannot be overstated.

The most memorable event in the NSFL for me was discovering and investigating the Er multis. What started as frustration from these seemingly uninvolved players putting up epic performance after epic performance eventually turned into bringing down one of the most trusted and respected users in the league. Like most in the league, I was frustrated by the Outlaws success. How could they keep winning, and keep winning, and keep winning with a roster that looked much like the rest of the league? And more so, what are they doing that the Liberty are not? So I looked through their players’ posts and initially found what I suspected to be graphic sharing between Tim Pest, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Luke Luechly. These users all created similar graphics, or had someone on the Outlaws creating graphics for them. From there I started to see weird IP trends with them. On the same day that Er was named the new owner of the league, I stumbled onto an IP match between Er and these questionable players. When I made that information public, posts began disappearing and logs began being deleted. While the majority of the league was still not convinced, I continued the investigation and stopped Er from becoming the league owner. This is definitely the most memorable thing that has happened to me in the league, but it is also what drove me from the league previously.

The most memorable part of the NSFL for me was tackling the offensive lineman problem.

Before I delve in to this, I want to go back to the very beginning. When I first joined the league, I saw a huge discrepancy at one position. Offensive Lineman. My problem is that position was never interesting to me, so I decided to exploit the lack of offensive lineman by playing a defensive lineman. This seemed to work great because there wasn't a ton of great defensive tackles, and the position was very impactful on the state of the game.

Fast forward 2 seasons and we have an even greater offensive lineman crisis. Er Created a bunch of multis to try and fix the problem and have his team win with that advantage. On top of that, Timeconsumer and many other top OL were getting very bored with the position and situation. Because of this, we had a very interesting problem. Make it not necessary to be fielded by players, make them still be customizable for differing team strategy, and allow players to play the position if they so wish by not making bots better than a human.

During this time I was head office and really the only HO working on this problem. I remember that I was sending a flurry of messages between Timeconsumer and relaying info to HO. I'm still very proud of the offensive lineman bot solution and think that it could really work for any position. The scaling and increasing costs is a great trade off and as players care more about getting paid, it can make niche positions help alleviate budget concerns.

Something that flies under the radar but has a huge impact on the league is none other than the Las Vegas Legion mass retirement party. Over half the team decided to throw a huge party, and it was bangin’, but things got out of hand and the players started to drop like flies. One after another after another, papers were being emailed in to the NSFL Headquarters of the Legion’s players all deciding that enough was enough for football and it was time to hang it up. Time and time again, until almost the whole team had decided to walk out of football on that day. Very few members decided to stick around and even a few that did decide to call it quits were given a second chance by the head office. It was then left in the hands of the great Bovovovovovovo to fix the Las Vegas disaster and turn the ship around, and turn the ship around he did. He turned the team into the New Orleans Second Line and they have been trending up and up ever since, so some people would say that the Las Vegas mass retirement party was a horrible thing, but it was actually a blessing in disguise.

Past events was never clarified as a definition, so I figured a past event would count as less than 24 hours ago. That's okay, right? Well, this past event comes on week 6 of the S9 DSFL season. The San Antonio Marshals, while starting off slow initially, have gotten off to a steady pace, winning two of their last 3 games. Now they're off to face the vaunted, undefeated Tijuana squad. This team is looking to pack a punch in the post season with their incredible air attack in Falconi and Metaxas and ground and pound esque run game with Achilles Hondo and Ricky Adams. But don't count out San Antonio's defense just yet. They lead the league in interceptions with an incredible 19 in week 6. Storm Woods is one of the clear most valuable players in this "no fly zone" secondary. And that's what they did, denying Falconi and Metaxas the passing game. They had to resort to the run game against a slightly weaker SA front 7 while Falconi attempted to recoup. However, it was no use, as the SA offense finally capitalized off of their incredible defense, going up 21-0 in the first quarter due to TO's. Tijuana did end up storming back into the game, but stop after stop, the final dagger was stabbed into TIJ's offense, leaving the score 34-21 as San Antonio puts the league on notice and ends Tijuana's winning streak.

The S9 DFSL draft for Portland was one of the best drafts anyone could imagine. They grabbed RB D'Pez Poopsie with the first round pick and boy is that kid speedy! He has been a great locker room presence and is determined to be the best runner in the draft and in the league, the kid is going places. With the 2nd round pick, Portland took QB Joliet L. Christ and he has so far not disappointed on or off the field. Like D'Pez, Christ is wanting to be the best at his respective position and with him leading the offense, the team is in good hands. The secondary was greatly improved by this draft and automatically puts them as one of the top secondaries in the whole DSFL after the draft. Lucari Felix is a speedster and talented cornerback and looks to be one of the top CBs in the DSFL and is developing quickly and is a great locker room presence and half of the #SuperstarSquad with QB Christ. Both safeties, Hobbs and Arnold are ballhawks and shut down the deep field and stifle opposing quarterbacks with their speed and skill. These two look to lead the back for the Pythons and both players are also developing quickly into terrific young stars. The last two mentioned, my boys, the wide receivers with Peterson and Hasselhoff, are awesome. Both players are terrific young athletes and come in looking to be dynamic. Hasselhoff has a lot to prove with his 7th round selection and even on an offense that is mainly a run based attack, is in the top five in many receiving categories. Peterson is also great to have around and him and Hasselhoff provide great options for Christ to throw to.

As much as it pains me to write about this, I'll be writing about the S7 Ultimus win by the Philadelphia Liberty. Everyone else is going to write about the mass retirements, the Nobles, or the Ers, but the one that hurts the most is the Liberty defying logic, reson, and the sim gods to win the Ultimus. It started with my team, the Yellowknife Wraiths, having the best record in the history of the league at 13-1 and finally securing home field advantage for the first time in team history. Every year, the Outlaws or the Otters always had home field and every year, the home team won. It was well known that in the playoffs, no road team has ever won a game. So what did the Liberty do? They came to the 13-1 Yellowknife Wraiths and beat them on their own field. It wasn't even really that close of a game. But in the Wraiths locker room, we were all thinking, "Well, we just handed OCO another trophy". This was indeed the first road playoff win in league history. So it was bound to happen in the Conference Championship game, but it would never happen in the Ultimus. Two road wins in a row? No way. Well as you can se by me writing about this, it happened, and not to be rude about it, but possibly the least talented team to make the playoffs won the Ultimus that year defeating both the 13-1 juggernaut Wraiths team and the three-peat Orange County Otters.
