Danny Grithead's favorite pet growing up was a huge rock that he found in his yard when he was just 5 years old. While other kids around his neighborhood got to have dogs at home as companions, Grithead's father was a strict disciplinarian who prevented Grithead from developing compassionate feelings for other living things, human or animal. As such, Grithead was forced to create his own emotional attachments to nonliving things like rocks or pebbles in his yard. This one rock, shaped very similar to a football, naturally became his favorite rock of them all. It reminded him of the very thing he loved most, a football, and most importantly it was a rock solid and gritty, indestructible form of a football! Grithead carried this big rock along with him everyday in his backpack to the farm fields, as he did not attend school. He always tucked it tightly and carefully under his arm, making sure that the rock was secure in his hands. Grithead attributes his great carrying ability to his many moments taking care of the valuable rock.
