There's a lot of talent in the NSFL, and predicting which player will break out is somewhat a science. There's obvious indicators, like conditioning, being on a franchise where a player is filling the shoes of a retired star and history of that player. There are a few players who can definitely fit this billing. But I think the next breakout star is none other than Kazimir Oles.
Oles is a top tier threat at Wide Receiver. He played his rookie season last year on a weak San Jose team with an old Mat Akselsen at the helm. since then they've moved on from Akselsen and brought it a new QB, Joliet Christ, who was a great QB in the DSFL. Oles has a phenomenal training regimen, and earns a high rate of TPE. Shane Weston, the long time number one receiver in San Jose is now a 3rd or 4th option. Oles and fellow young WR, Xavier Flash are going to be a solid 1-2 punch for Christ for many years if they keep this team in tact. Last season, Flash outplayed Oles when it came to yards. Flash got 1127 yards compared to Oles 868. But Oles got more scores than Flash did, 8 to 4. This was as a rookie, while Flash was already in the league for a season. Now that Oles is in his second season, he's already accrued a higher TPE than Flash and as the season progresses, Oles will beat out Flash as the primary target for Christ, relegating Flash to #2 status. I would not be shocked if Oles finishes the season as the Sabercats top WR, and Oles cracks the top 5 overall. I'm guessing 1300 yards and 8 TDs.
Vinny Valentine is an easy choice to "break out". The kid is going to be something special. He's already eclipsed his S10 receiving yards total, and we've just played one game! Valentine is part of the future core of Hawks WRs, a group that's gonna be there for a while. This includes guys like L'Alto, Harp, Nagasawa, Hobbs, and of course, Valentine himself. However, Valentine is finally ascending in the role he was meant to fill. As of right now, he's still the #2 receiver on the totem pole behind Hawk 4 life Trey Willie, but he looks to fill the shoes of that man next season, as he'll eclipse Willie in TPE. Valentine has already flashed his explosiveness, with a punt return taken for a touchdown against Yellowknife. It is clear Valentine has already developed a rapport with free agent signee Ryan Applehort, drawing 7 targets in Applehort's debut in a Hawks uniform. This sort of trust is remarkable, especially in a 2nd year guy Applehort has never played with. Sure, Willie emerged as the leader in targets, with a solid 9, and put up a eye popping 22 yards per catch, but Valentine truly stole the show, flashing his versatility in the return game with a punt return touchdown.
To open this season there were a number of critics that were claiming that first year player Ryan Cobalt would fail to make the impact on the Philadelphia Liberty that a ninth overall pick would be expected to make, but in his first game Cobalt has already dispelled any questions. The young superstar strong safety out of the San Antonio Marshals development program and more latter the Holy Cross Crusaders football team quickly got his start in the league by posting five tackles and forcing a fumble which he recovered for a defensive turnover. While the Liberty would go on to lose the game, Cobalt was a mood changer for the Liberty locker room who went out and had a stellar competition. Cobalt should look to only continue to improve all season long as he becomes more and more comfortable in his skin as the season progresses. Already there is clear improvement to his speed and on field intelligence, and these become more and more prevalent as we see more of his practice footage. Cobalt is the knight in shining armor that the Philadelphia Liberty need to finally set them over the edge, and will be a huge part of their oncoming push for the title.
Breakout player more like should have been Marquise Brown award. I mean come on, 1900 yards last year and not even a vote bro. I guess breakout player is a player that wasn’t expected to do well? Balthazar Crindy is ready to break out. The Arizona Outlaws TE is poised to become the next star Tight End in a league that is still somewhat devoid of them after all this time. Don't beleive me? I know you don't, person reading this. Let's take a look at his first two seasons for a comparison on where he's been.
S9
56 catches
376 yards
1 TD
6.7 average per catch
S10
73 catches
501 yards
1 TD
6.9 yards per catch
That jump from season 1 to 2 was quite nice and he did it with a young QB as well. One of the big factors here is that not only has Crindy himself improved, but Ryan Fitzpatrick has also showed tremendous improvement going into his own third season. With Fitzpatrick being mroe of intermediate thrower than a long ball guru, he's going to be targeting a lot of real estate that Crindy makes his living in. That's a recipe for greater success if there ever was one. Expect the combo to start lighting it up as the season goes on and as defenses start having to focus on second year WR Viggo Squanch as well. This is a team who is destined to pass the ball more as well with workhorse future Hall of Famer Reg Mackworthy looking to be in his final stand. All of this is a whirlpool of opportunity and Crindy is going to benefit tremendously from it. Let's face it. He's about to be the next mega star of the entire league.
I am going to open this up by saying as much as I'd love none other than to write about myself, I am going to talk about new teammate Dre Bly. The dude is a seasoned vet who knows how to get the job done and he will push Lucari to become a better player. Being able to have pressure taken off of him from Lucari opposite him should help both of them out. While Bly is listed as the number one corner, he will be looking to completely take one side of the field out of the opposing team's game plan. This team revamped their secondary most recently in the draft and Bly came in via trade. Things are looking a lot better for this team and two rookie safeties out there to help out shouldn't hurt Bly and his numbers this year. While I don't think it will be game changing numbers, I do think he will have one of his more efficient seasons and who knows? Maybe he goes and surprises some people and tops some of his career high numbers with the Liberty. All I know is that it is a great thing to call him a teammate and be able to have a seasoned vet to look up to and learn from.
One player to watch, and we already saw a glimpse at his future success in week 1, is Vinny Valentine. He’s an up and coming wide receiver playing for the Baltimore Hawks. With Avon Blocksdale regressing, I am sure Vinny was beginning to get concerned about who was going to be tossing him the ball in the coming seasons. All those questions were answered this past off season when IamSLM, who is quite possibly the league’s most competent GM, signed and brought Ryan Applehort into Baltimore. With this signing, Vinny knows he is set up for success for the next several seasons.
Win week 1, Baltimore hosted the Yellowknife Wraiths. While they aren’t the league’s most dominating team, they do boast some of the most successful defensive backs in the league. However, they were no match for Valentine as he torched them for 117 yards on just 7 receptions but he wasn’t done there. He also saw some special teams where he fielded a punt and returned it 86 yards to pay dirt just to add insult to injury as the Hawks were already leading by a double-digit margin. If you got Vinny Valentine on your fantasy team, consider yourself lucky because this kid is in for an amazing season.
One player who I'm expecting to perform a lot better this season is Kansas City Coyotes wide receiving premier talent Yulic Nagasawa. Last season Nagasawa was backed by Andrew Reese, but had a very small supporting cast to split receptions with and the massive amount of receptions he got eventually took their tole on him as he fell down in the receiving standings. This season though, it's a whole different story as Nagasawa joins with rookie quarterpack and amazingly talented Luke Boechler as well as rookie receiver Krispy Kreme. Both players come from the Holy Cross Crusaders football program and already have a very strong bond that keeps them together. These two players along with Nagasawa will make up one of the most formidable receiving corps in the league this season, and will work together to have a firepower of an offense. The Coyotes took their first game of the season against the Tijuana Luchadores in a massive win on the road, taking down last season's league championships with a display of grandeur. As the season progresses you can expect to see Nagasawa get a lot of receptions and score a lot of touchdown off the exceptional arm of the rookie Luke Boechler.
