The time has come and, with the S11 Ultimus in the books, the S12 Mock Draft is the next big event for us to look forward to. That means that we’re able to have 20,000 Mock Draft articles to look forward to. And with that comes a lot of opinions to sift through when determining how to predict your own Mock Draft, so you can get that max TPE. Now, of course, you could just do like everyone else and copy the person above you, but how do you know that their mock draft is any good?
Fortunately, I’m here to help you out.
As many of you know, I’m a former GM with many contacts. I try to stay impartial in these situations, but I’m well aware of the intentions of many current GMs. And, as much as I’m looking forward to the reveal, there’s going to be some big shocks and I don’t want myself and the other war room members to get stuck with a low TPE average. So, at the risk of burning a few bridges, I am going to post what would be my own mock draft if I had to post one.
Pick #1 - Bwestfield - James Bishop (WR)
No surprise here. Don’t overthink it. The greatest WR of the first generation of the NSFL recreates as the same position that he dominated the first time. This is a dynasty-caliber player who is going to take the team that drafts him to the next level. He’s been a top earner in TPE for most of his first career and, as expected, that has continued with James Bishop. The only difference is that he’s going to be surrounded by better talent than Westfield was at the start of his career due to everyone starting out evenly in S1. I’m predicting that James Bishop will have a better career than Westfield did and San Jose obviously wants in on that.
San Jose also needs a big WR in his draft as Shane Weston is retiring and S10 draftee Taylor Peterson is hardly in any shape to be the team’s WR2, much less a WR1. Expect Bishop to be the man in San Jose (and probably the entire NSFL) for many seasons to come.
Pick #2 - Mavfatha - Freezer Riposte (DT)
Baltimore shocked the world this week in a huge deal that saw them acquire the Second Round pick from YKW. A few people probably expect them to go for QB Luke Bochler, who has a promising future ahead of him, but I’m told the team has other plans early on. They want to fill the slot opened up by Arbin Asipi Jr. retiring and I’ve been told that Freezer Riposte is the guy they want to fill that spot. He’s a solid earner who’s earned well so far as a prospect and can make an immediate impact. D-Line is still a big need for many teams across the league, so expect the DEs/DTs that stand out to go early. Mavfatha should do well long-term in this role and I can’t fault the Hawks for going after him so early on.
Pick #3 - PICK REDACTED
As a member of the ARI war room, I have chosen to take the safe route and redact the name of this pick. However, I can say that this is a player whose name you do know and no one will be surprised when he’s chosen at all. Honestly, in any other draft, this player easily could go #1 overall. There are a few consensus top 8 players that got left out of this draft, which is what will make this year’s draft so shocking, but I can at least say that this guy won’t get pushed out of the top 8 and absolutely deserves to be here. He fills a position that a lot of people aren’t necessarily expecting us to take, but we believe in the motto of “player first, position second”. Sometimes, you simply have to re-organize your depth chart to accommodate a top tier player and this man is worth the trouble. Nonetheless, I dropped some big hints here and I’ll drop more as we progress through my picks, so take what you can from this.
Pick #4 - Symmetrik - Luke Smyles (DE)
Symmetrik has a reputation as a solid earner and is a name that many of us immediately recognize from the forums. He managed to play a vital role in the league as for 10 seasons, which is no easy task. The Liberty are also losing Eli Kamaka to retirement and will need to replace him. With Freezer Riposte going at #2, Symmetrik is the next best option and I think the Liberty are going to snag him while he’s available, which would be smart because he won’t be there in the second round if some of my sources from other teams are to be believed. At close to 200 TPE, Smyles is ready to step into an immediate starting role, which is exactly what you need from a first-round pick.
Pick #5 - Mack - Neo Donaldson (K/P)
This move makes sense, but will also shock a lot of people. In a draft this deep, you don’t expect a kicker to go off the board in the first round. However, the buzz going around is that people see Mack as a team player who’s willing to fill a needed position that is drawing less interest with each season. It’s just a matter of time before active kickers become a true commodity and the Yeti GMs want to lock this guy in while they can. I haven’t been able to confirm that he will go in the 1st if he does fall past the Yeti, but several teams with early-to-mid second-round picks are eyeing him and I’m hearing that the Yeti don’t want to risk him not being there when their next pick comes around. Peg Leg hasn’t updated in over half a year and, with McCormick now filling the QB role, the team is ready to move to someone new. At only 123 TPE, the hope was that Mack would fall on many teams’ radar, but he created only 3 weeks ago and has quickly become a competitor for the top earner per week in this draft class, which has caught a lot of attention.
Pick #6 - jaskins811 - Mike Mughes (CB)
One of only top CBs in this draft and Mughes is the top prospect at this position by a wide margin. I had the opportunity to share a locker room with him early on and was super impressed with Askins. He’s put in a tremendous effort and I think that’s going to be rewarded with a first-round spot. Out of the top 6 picks, 3 have been players that aren’t top 8 in total TPE, but are top 8 in TPE earned by week. I’m told that, with the depth of these drafts, GMs are thinking long-term with these picks rather than just chasing a TPE player that created right after the trade deadline. If my sources are correct and Mughes is available, OCO will draft him and he will join Spector at the CB position, giving the team two young studs that can help dominate the Secondary. As a fan of the league, I’m excited to what the team can do defensively in the long term. As a player, I’m just glad I’m no longer a WR because I wouldn’t want to face that pair over the next few seasons.
Pick #7 - YoungGreekBoy - Luke Bochler (QB)
This is the pick that we’re all expecting and I think the Hawks are going to pull the trigger when it comes. They risked not taking him at #2, but will grab him at #7. YGB has been an outstanding earner and has one of the highest TPE totals in this prospect class. He’d be a top 4 pick at any other position, but falls to #7 due to over-saturation at the QB position and that’s a big win for the Hawks, who exit the first round with two amazing picks that will help the team for years to come.
Pick #8 - PigSnout - Errol Maddox (WR)
The former Boss Tweed has dominated as a Running Back and Linebacker and now he’s expected to do exactly that in the WR role. The first round opens with a WR pick and ends with one as well. This is a class deep in WRs, but like Bwestfield, PigSnout is a proven user that adds a lot of value to any team he’s on. I enjoyed playing with him in YKW and am sure his new teammates in NOLA will be happy to have him there. He joins Vladimir Fyodovich at the WR role and the two will undoubtedly make a dangerous tandem in the long-term, especially being backed by Borkus Maximus III. NOLA can’t continue to rely on Paul DeMirio to help them in the passing game for much longer and will need a young WR that they can count on. They have a lot of confidence in this guy and I’m confidant that they won’t let him fall out of the first round.
Second Round AKA Honorable Mentions
There are several guys that are expected to go in the first two rounds and I want to give them a shout out as well. These are guys that could also make their way into the first round and, while I’m predicting that they won’t, that’s not a knock on them. This is just a really loaded draft. For the record, I’m not saying these are the exact 8 that will fill the second round as drafts are known to be unpredictable and I’m not comfortable enough to try to predict two whole rounds, but I won’t be surprised if many of these guys comprise the second round. Also, note that I’m not including the two GM players, who will obviously go in the second round.
(For the purposes of full disclosure, I am including the guy I expect Arizona to draft in these mentions simply because, if I didn’t, I would basically reveal them by process of elimination and I don’t want to risk doing that.)
AdamS - Dick Wizardry (RB)
Wizardry has a really nice FB build that will complement almost any team that drafts him. It’s extremely rare to see an active player play a Blocking Back and AdamS has proven that he’s one to stick around. He’s also a user with tons of GM experience, which will help any team that drafts him. He’s a user that belongs in the first round, but his position is a little too niche for GMs to feel comfortable burning a first-round pick on according to what I’m seeing out of several teams.
DeathOnReddit - Arbin Asipi III (RB)
One of the league’s most dedicated users and a guy that I expect to do well in the RB position. Having shared a locker room with DOR before, he’s a solid guy behind the scenes and I think he’s someone that the team that drafts him can really count on.
PDXBaller - Axel Hornbacher (S)
The man, the myth, the legend. PDX is a guy that many teams would love to have and now they’re going to have that chance. I won’t elaborate too much as his reputation precedes him, but I simply couldn’t do a mock draft without mentioning his name.
RainDelay - Rylant Wright (WR)
I absolutely love this user. I had the honor of sharing a locker room with him for several seasons and he brings a lot of knowledge to the table. Huge value. It’s a shame that he’s in a draft where he’s competing with players like Bwestfield and PigSnout for the same position, but as I’ve already said, the WR talent in this draft is insane.
SammyG - Sam Garrad (DT)
Another great addition to the D-line talent in this draft. I’m not as familiar with the user, but his effort so far speaks for itself and he’s someone whose stock has been rising quickly.
StamkosFan - Tommy Helanen (WR)
My sleeper of the draft. At only 126 TPE, he’s still a top earner based on TPE per week and at least a few teams are hoping to catch him in the Second Round if he’s there. If he can keep that activity level up, StamkosFan is a user name that we’ll all be familiar with in a few seasons.
Thanks for reading, of course. As with any mock draft, I have no doubt this will be controversial, but I’m confident that I’ll be vindicated one Draft Day. I have to take the average TPE as a War Room member and, as a former GM, I should probably have to take it regardless given my contacts, but I’m hoping that you can benefit from my knowledge and earn well above average with my help. Best of luck to all of the prospects in the draft.
