You know some may say its too early to make MVP Predictions, but you know what it's never too early for? Making money with spur-of-the-moment articles... Let's talk about some MVP candidates.
1.
Sabercats QB Joliet L. Christ
Jesus. L. Christ. What a Week 1 performance for Joliet against the Yeti. 17/20, 252 yards, and a whopping SIX touchdowns. That alone would put you on MVP watch lists, but throw in his rushing yards, and you're looking at the kind of game that people will be talking about for years to come. Christ ran the ball 11 times for another 105 yards. In this game, Christ set the single-game Sabercats record in passing touchdowns, completion percentage, passer rating, and probably rushing yards by a quarterback, but I couldn't confirm that last one. This was a historic performance, and Christ is already well out in front to snag another MVP, and I hope we get more performances like this one so the MVP race will actually be competitive.
2.
Hawks QB Childish Gambino
It's not often that a 400 yard, 4 touchdown game will fly under the radar, but Gambino's lights-out performance vs. New Orleans unfortunately did just that. Gambino went 22/43 for 407 yards, 4 TDs, and a single INT, along with a 24 yard run just for good measure. Three different Hawks receivers finished with over 80 receiving yards and at least one touchdown. Childish could do it all out there, and it looks like he's gonna bring the Hawks to good things.
3.
Sabercats WR Kazamir Oles
It feels weird to put both the QB and the receiver from the same team in the MVP race, but you can't ignore the fact the Oles was just running up the score on the Yeti. Oles finished the day with just five receptions on six attempts, but they went for 112 yards and a Sabercats tied-record 3 TDs. Oles was shredding the Yeti defense with big play after big play. He also contributed in the punt return game with a few very nice returns that set up the Cats in excellent field position. Christ to Oles is a scary combination right now.
4.
Otters DT Thorian Skarsgard
The Yellowknife offense played like a bunch of corpses and a large reason for that was the run stuffing ability of one Thorian Skarsgard. Skarsgard terrorized the Wraiths offense to the tune of two sacks, one tackle for loss, and seven total tackles, and honestly, that TFL column should have a few more in it, since he stopped a lot of plays at the line of scrimmage. "Thor" is just starting to enter his prime, so if he somehow gets even better, he'll be a DPotY frontrunner, and maybe an MVP candidate.
5.
Second Line WR Vladimir Fyodorovich
The New Orleans offense had trouble getting going at various points against Baltimore, but when it was going, it was going through Fyodorovich. Borkus Maximus went to him often, collecting 6 catches for 160 yards and a touchdown, narrowly missing the record for most receiving yards in a game by a Second Lineman. Everyone knows what this guy can do on the field, he's a maxed out player who has one of the highest TPEs in the league. If the Second Line are gonna make any kind of deep run this year, Fyodorovich will need this kind of MVP caliber season.
6.
Hawks TE Verso L'Alto
Childish Gambino and Verso L'Alto were making sweet, sweet music on the field against New Orleans. L'Alto pulled down a Week 1-leading 8 receptions for 106 yards and 2 TDs. Last year, he was arguably robbed of the Best TE of the Year award, and now this year, he's taking the most direct route to correcting that, going to last year's winner's team, and just taking his receptions by force, as Declan Harp was held to just one reception. It'll be an interesting little storyline with the Hawks this season to see if Harp wants to get more involved with the offense after such a good season, but for now L'Alto is playing like a man possessed.
