This point task (PT) asks us, the players and users of the National Simulation Football League (NSFL) to write about the biggest draft bust in the league’s history drafted before season 18. To be honest I do not really know much about the league’s history and I usually do my point tasks in the Pro Baseball Experience (PBE) simulation league and use the affiliation here but today I decided to not do that and instead write my point task here. In my eyes, one of the biggest draft busts was my last player, Jake Utler. Going into the season 17 draft, he was one of the most sought after players in the DSFL. I had GMs telling me that they draft me in the first round and even in the top few picks in the draft. Unfortunately for them, I became the co GM of the Solar Bears so I was automatically drafted to them in the second round. This is where things quickly went wrong. I was brand new to the league and had no idea what was going on. The main GM went on vacation in the offseason which left me with all of the responsibility for the team. I didn’t know how the league or the sim worked so it was tough to do anything and I found it difficult to get answers from the head office. This ultimately ended with me stepping down from the GM position and going inactive in the league with that player. I went from a top tier pick in the DSFL to a late round risk in the NSFL draft so that’s a pretty big bust.
It’s not unusual that sometimes a drafted player doesn't meet the high expectations of the team that chooses him/her and goes on to find success in another franchise. In that case it would be seen as a bust for the former. One pick that comes to mind recently, which fulfills this criteria happened during one of the most crowded drafts in NSFL history: the Season 18 Draft. At 5th overall, San Jose was looking for a strong start in its rebuilding phase and they selected one of the best running backs in Marcella T?riki to be the central piece of its young offensive group. Immediately called up from the DSFL, T?riki went on to finish her first professional season with 889 rushing yards, 4 rushing touchdown, 47 passing yards and 1 passing touchdown.
Then the worst scenario for the SaberCats occurred: they weren't able to reach an agreement with T?riki just before the start of Season 19 and she left as a free agent who signed later on with New Orleans; with them, T?riki was able to found the performance she longed to achieve. As for San Jose, not only did they let go of a high character player that usually makes an immediate impact, they wasted a first round pick on one season that turned out awful; their plans had to change for the next draft in which they were forced to look for a running back early on the process, with a second round pick used in RB Quindarius Tyerucker. Going back to the Season 18 draft, maybe it was best for San Jose to get a running back like Mathias Hanyadi or Matthew Vincent in later rounds and choose QB Jay Cue as their new franchise player, but one could never know that things would go as bad as with T?riki and them.
i mean, I gotta say, when u think of draft busts, arent Chicago always in contention. Did some research and in the first round they drafted a WR by the name of Sweet James-Jones. Well if you dont know him, he was banned from the league, so does not really seem like a first round pick. Since Chicago was a pretty new franchise, it was the start or middle of their downwards spiral since then.
To make this even worse based on my research, a Wide Reciever was always chosen, and I always say, dont draft the same position twice in the first round. This was in season 19, where if you look at it now, there are top prospects like Jed Podolak and Rayne Gordo who are better prospects in retrospect.
Well, if I have not explained why it is a bust, lets think about what a first round pick is. A first round pick should be someone that the whole franchise is supposed to be built around. If you can't count on a first round pick, then you might as well trade all your picks. Now, Chicago should not get all blame since no one knew he would get banned, but thats what draft scouting is for, too spot the people who are red flags, like me!
