Disclaimer: I've been making media on expansion team ideas for a bit now so this has nothing to do with recent drama.
Hey guys WildfireMicro here and today I want to talk about how I would build an expansion team from the ground up. This is not me saying I want to get an expansion team right now as I'm pretty commited to the Liberty it's just me saying how I would GM a team that's starting from nothing. I will be going over the look and branding of the team,, the players I would target in the expansion draft, how I would make my discord locker room, and how I would build the team into a contender.
First off we need the expansion branding, colors, and logo. For this exercise I am going to be putting a team in Louisville called the Louisville Spirits. I've talked about the name in a previous media but I'll go over it again. The name is a reference to three things that represent not just Louisville but the whole state of Kentucky: the spirit of horse breeding and racing, the Bourbon industry that's huge in Kentucky, and the motto that's on the state sign. I am from Kentucky so I would love a team being located there as it's frequently ignored in sim leagues. It's a great city and even though it's small it's probably a bigger city then Yellowkinfe.
One thing I would hope happens is that I get a co-GM who wants to constantly communicate with me so we are on the same page. I hope any problems with have we can talk through. Maybe having an more experienced with the league co-GM would help here. Despite being here for a while I don't know everything and it would be helpful for then to give me advice and walk me through some steps.
Now I am not good at graphic design at all but hopefully I could get someone to help make the logo for me. My idea for the logo is a horse coming out of a circular logo with air coming out of its nose. Yes that's a rough idea for what a logo is but again I am not a graphic designer. I think the colors would ether be sliver and black or incorporate bronze somewhere in there. Maybe red and pewter would work too just like the Tampa Bay Bucs irl but hopefullyif that happened I wouldn't be put in the same division as the red trio. Ace from the London Royals locker room once said purple and gold when I discussed this in thiet but NOLA exists. No matter the colors I would hope they would end up looking great on the uniforms.
Now to discuss the expansion draft. I would mostly target users that are active but prehaps haven't had the same opportunity as thier teammates. Most of the targets would hopefully be relatively young players who would help build the foundation for this team. I know it would be a while before we are truly playoff contenders. Not every expansion team can be as lucky as New York. I also know probably not every player we can get would be active but maybe I can lure a few back.
Next we have to discuss the Discord locker room. I would make it a friendly and easy to navigate place for players coming in. I would call the private team general chat channel "The Stable" and then call the public general chat "The Track". I would also include various channels for helping with builds and posting graphics and media and even a Dotts card channel. I would also hope to make it a place where users who aren't players would hope to visit. I don't want a closed locker room.
Now I think the best way we can build the team is too build through the draft. I think that would help with getting us loyal players who would want to see the rebuild through. Not that I wouldn't use free agency from time to time I just think slowly building through the draft might be the best option. We will get to know the players we drafted over time and hopefully they would come to like it in Louisville.
If I had the first overall pick or another top 5 pick I would probably look to trade down unless there is a prospect that I absolutely can’t risk being taken before me. I personally think that having more draft picks is more important than having high ones since we can get more users and potentially get some steals. I was actually a third round pick for the Liberty and I am earning like mad so I know thier are occasionally really active users that are overlooked. It's all about how I ultimately scout these users and how I think they will do as a result.
Speaking of scouting, the war room in the Discord would be called "The Press Box". I would obviously only have people I trust in there including a scout. They would help with learning about potential new teammates and who we should take and who we should probably avoid. I wouldn't use a questionnaire however because I find that to be not really personal enough. I would also invite the new prospects to hang out in the prospect chat in the locker room to get to know them better. The more I know about a user the more I can see if they would be good to draft. Activity is as important as tpe gains for me.
I am also kind of glad that sim testing is gone so I don't have to learn that nonsense. Still I would definitely discuss strategies with my co-GM so we know our playback going into the match up. I know Sim is gonna sim so we might lose some games we thought we could win and win some games we should have probably lost on paper but that's the luck of the draw. I would try my best to keep morale up along the way so no one discouraged.
Overall I hope you were at the very least entertained by this media. Maybe one day I will get a team but for rn I am happy with the Liberty. Thank you guys for reading and I will see you on the field.
