This is from my player Tsuyu Asui's perspective.
Hey guys Tsuyu Asui here and I am in a reflective mood. I am currently in the middle of my second DSFL season if you don't count my waiver year. And I had 4 years playing college football to think about. Basically it's been an interesting few years and I like to think I have grown a lot since then. This crazy dream of mine has come true and I couldn't be happier. So I am here to share some of my favorite moments and memories from my career thus far and to look forward to what's next for me with potentially being called up.
One of my favorite memories from my college career is a game against the Vanderbilt Commodores where I think I had my best college game stats wise. True there where games that meant more to the season overall but I am very proud of how I played that day. I had 11 catches for 200 yards and 3 touchdowns. Adam couldn't miss me on the field and it was my career day before I went to the pros.
Adam...whenever I think of my former quarterback Adam James I am reminded about how life sometimes just isn't fair. Adam was going to be a big pick in the DSFL draft before a car crash ruined his leg. Unfortunately he still hasn't completely recovered and still has a limp in his leg, or at least he did the last time I talked to him which admittedly was half a year ago. I should definitely call him the first chance I get. He was and still is an amazing person to talk to.
Getting back on topic, adjusting to life in London wasn't easy. It took me forever to get the names of certain food right, and my first time ordering fish and chips was embarrassing admittedly. I kept asking for fries until someone finally corrected me. Ironically I now love fish and chips. Luckily there was a store that sold food from my home country of Japan so I can always make my homemade ramen and dumplings right. I tend to not like ramen unless its done in a specific way that my mother taught me. She learned it from my grandmother.
A bigger thing to adjust too was the level of talent in the DSFL, which was a huge step up from college. Yes even from SEC level college football. I had to prove myself again to a whole new team that only had film to get a grasp on what I'm capable of. It's why in my waiver year I wasn't used that much in a year where we made the Ultimini but unfortunately lost. After that game I had some ice cream and horror movies to calm me down, specifically mostly zombie movies. Still, I worked as hard as I could and London was impressed enough to draft me in the actual DSFL draft. So I didn't have to move at all which was nice.
My next year was definitely an improvement in terms of on the field performance. With Cortez trusting me more I was able to get a lot more playing time and my stats vastly improved. Plus I made a lot more friends now that I wasn't nervous around them all the time. Marlon Brando especially was one I developed a pretty good chemistry with. He is still often invited to my post win ramen dinner. He doesn't often have time to join, but still.
Cortez was also a great guy to be around and was very nice and respectful to me. I owe him a lot for showing me how the DSFL works and easing me into things. He was my Quarterback for two seasons and I respect him a lot. I think Red Arrow Jr. can be a great replacement if he keeps up his training and I think having a couple of veteran receivers will help. I wish them both the best of luck.
I was ultimately drafted by the Philadelphia Liberty in the ISFL draft way later then I think I should have been. It may have had to do with the fact that I was such an unusual talent may teams didn't know what to make of me. It's alright though, I am ready to prove the Liberty right in drafting me and show what a steal I am for getting me in the third round. I've had to prove myself to so many others so many times in my life so this is no different. I know what I'm worth so I am gonna get what I'm worth. Just like Rocky said.
Now looking towards the future I honestly hope I can keep this momentum I have built up on going. I know that I can potentially be one of the hardest workers in the league if I keep on going, so I have no plans on stopping anytime soon. I hope I can be an amazing player for the Liberty next season if I get called up and keep showing people that the frog can play. But first I have unfinished business here in London.
Right now my goal in London is to of course reach an Ultimini. It's the goal of every DSFL player I'd like to think. I can't think too far ahead to the horizon and forget what's in front of me. We are currently 3-3 and are in a good spot to get into the playoffs. Kansas City and Portland are looking for those spots too so we can't stop now in anyway. Until I am a part of the Liberty I am a Royal and must play for them with pride. And I hope the other Royals will do it with pride as well.
Anyways I think that's all I have to say in this article. I am currently writing this right after practice while I rest and I have a game tomorrow so I don't have much time. I hope you all enjoyed and I hope to see you all on the field. Until next time Tsuyu Asui out.
