I have packed up my life, caught a plane and as I'm flying somewhere over the pacific ocean I thought I'd take these several hours to sit and reflect on my time here in the DSFL as I make my move to the ISFL.
What a season this rookie one has been but back to back rookie seasons, here I come! Nothing like being the new kid on the block two seasons in a row. I'm disappointed I couldn't help my team to getting to the playoffs but boy, NTG and Uber definitely did what they could to get us there! While I’m at the first level of disappointment that I couldn’t perform to the level that I previously have as I grew up. I was talking to a scout about my stats and they said, very matter of fact-ly I might add, that they are ‘nothing to complain about but probably won’t be winning an award’. Which I agree. I ended the season on 85 Receptions, 1111 Receiving Yards (what a pleasant number to remember) and 4 Touch Downs. My average receiving yar was 12.6 yards and my largest was 56 yards. That one felt impressive. In 14 games I dropped the ball 15 times, which is probably half that too many, but it is what it is. I think I ended about smack bang in the middle of my fellow wide receivers. But hey, I didn’t win any awards but I did make the pro bowl! So that is something!
It was great to be drafted back home, even if it's not in Sunny Queensland home, but kinda sunny and kinda cold Sydney, it was still amazing to be back in Australia. Spending the time away for college was hard to be away from friends and family so making it to Bondi Beach Buccaneers was nice. I could pop back home occasionally when I had some free time but I always also able to have a rotation of family and friends cheering for the Buccaneers from the sidelines. Everyone wanted, and was able, to come and watch me play.
I'm so glad that I was able to play under the guidance of Uber before his GMing retirement and Void. steps up and in his stead.
This season started off with me having no idea what I was doing on the field and just kind of floundering and finding my groove. Well, not exactly no idea what I was doing but finding my groove with the rest of the team.
I would like to think I had a meh to okay start to the DSFL. I know that my start here will be nothing to write home about, I may just write a media piece instead, haha. But my first and only season here in the DSFL brought me all of my firsts here in this league at this level. So I thought that I would take the opportunity to discuss each game and the firsts for me in each of them.
Week 1 saw us playing Norfolk Seawolves at Bondi Beach. The home crowd for the first official game of the season was thrilling. What was even better was the big W that came with it. 26-18! As great as this score was, I really did not play a part in that with a total of 16 Tar I only caught 4 of them. Let’s put that down to first game nerves. But I made 49 yards so I guess not all bad.
Week 2 so a loss of 40 to 23 against the Tijuana Luchadores while at home in Bondi Beach. Even though we lost I saw a huge improvement in my stats. I went 8 Receptions for 10 Target Receptions -which is great. With 68 yards made and my largest being 14.
Week 3 we played in Texas against the Dallas Birddogs. We came home with the win from that game. 2 66% win rate at this point but let’s not get ahead of ourselves here, not just yet. So we win 42 to 28, nice little margin there. I made 6 receptions with a Tar of 9. But I made 96 yards with my largest being 29 yards so overall still improving but no touchdowns yet.
Week 4 apparently wants to follow the same pattern with a Loss to Portland Pythons. 2 Wins and now 2 losses. The score was 41 to 21. It stings just a little bit loosing to fellow Australian and Queenslander, Sailor. But a consolation was scoring my first touch down. Which obviously made me way to giddy as I completely fumbled the ball for the rest of the day with 4 receptions from 13 targets. But hey, one could argue I made the most important one and made it count.
We were back at home in Sydney for Week 5 when we won against London Royals 45 to 24. This was the game to perform in, my parents were in town to watch the game so I dialled it up to 10 and scored 2 Touch downs. I made 6 receptions from 8 targets with 78 yards and my longest being a whopping 36 yards.
We met face to face with Minnesota Grey Ducks at home for Week 6 and left with the loss of 38-14. Even though the game was a loss, I made the most receptions with 8 from 11 Targets, with 109 yards and an average of 13.6 and the largest of 26 yards.
The Living on a Prayer game (half way there or well, through the season). We faced Kansas City Coyotes for the first time this season. We faced them and lost, unfortunately, 16 to 10. It wasn’t a huge loss, but a loss is a loss, right? During this game I made 5 from 7 targets, with 46 yards in total. Nothing flash like previous games but still on the board, counting to my total yards.
Week 8, this week we travelled to Norfolk to play the Seawolves and came out with a win. It was close, a lot closer than last weeks loss. But just like last week, a win is a win, am I right? We won 28 to 26. As per usual, I missed the usual 2 receptions but I did make 107 yards with the largest being 56 yards. Half the length of the field!
Week 9 saw us in Mexico playing the Tijuana Luchadores and I really don’t adore them. 42 to 37. Again, not a huge loss. No touchdowns for me this game but I did make 178 yards and lost the normal 2-3 receptions. Will I ever have the same amount of receptions to targets?
Onto Week 10, I still have so much of this flight left and not a lot of games left to discuss. Maybe I’ll watch a few movies. Or watch tapes of Arizona from last season and begin learning how to be the best. We lost to the Dallas Birddogs 45 to 17 at home – disappointing but whatever. Look we lost, but I had the most receptions so that is something bright to come out of the loss, my yardage was pretty average.
Week 11 are at home playing the Portland Pythons with a devastating loss of 38 to 36. 2 point loss – again! It was so devastating as I scored my last touchdown for the season. 9 receptions from 13 targets with 129 yards!
Come Week 12 we are definitely on the home stretch, but away. Away in London playing the Royals. This game is accompanied with a win of 30-20. It may have been my worst performing game. Ever. Ive played junior games better than this one. 2 receptions from 5 targets with 17 yards. What can I say, it was just an off game. I was tired, its been a long season so far. I remember being tired at the end of the school term and that was only 10 weeks. This is 12 weeks and it been a lot more tolling on my body.
Week 13. Second to last week of the season and we lose to the Minnesota Grey Ducks, again. But I am thankful that it was a smaller margin that the first loss to them. And I really dropped the ball at the end of the season here. Sorry, BBBers. I really let the team down here. 4 receptions from 9 targets with a whole 37 yards. Not my best work, let’s move on.
Week 14. Home. Against Kansas City Coyotes. We won! The final score was 40 to 34. I made 7 receptions from 9 targets, so back to the usual missing of 2 with 83 yards. Not as impressive as other games but I feel I took the season out with a personal win.
So no play offs for us but a good season in the end.
Throughout the final few games there were quite a few scouts out and about wanting to chat. Of course, I made the time to chat to them, they were all super important. And obviously, I have ended up at Arizona Outlaws with Wendell Sailor – we finally get to play together again. Well in a few seasons anyway.
So, there, if you are still here, I appreciate it and I hope that I have written about the stats correctly. Just comment if I haven’t.
