(S3) - PT #5 - Paying the Bills

Not too much happens in Jaylon Lee's off-season, his biggest thing is to keep putting in work so he can be among the best linebackers in the NSFL. He wants to work so hard that nothing can stop him and nobody can say that he wasn't among the best to ever play. There are always going to be detractors and young guys pushing for the spots, but Jaylon Lee tries to not worry about what his competition is doing. To make a bit of spare money, he will cover basketball during the off-season, but usually just spends that money on attending other sporting events or on training. After his rookie season, he actually worked at Popeye's because he loved being able to get free chicken. When he's not on the field or working some job that he acquired for fun, Lee can be found at his house relaxing with his friends and family. When he got to the league, Lee moved all of his family out to Arizona and they have been settled there ever since he got in the league. The off-season is really the only time he gets to see them, so he also spends a lot of time hanging out with his parents and siblings.

Outside of football, Ricky Maddox has two clear loves in his life. One of which everyone should know about is his infatuation with chicken wings. The other is something a lot of people probably didn't expect from Ricky.

It's his love for the game of Pool and surprisingly, he managed to make his two loves (outside of obviously football) go hand in hand.

Ricky Maddox is the sole owner of one of the biggest bar/restaurants in Yellowknife named "Mad Maddox Wings." He built the establishment with a few friends and family from the ground up and it's been a hit from the first day opening up. One of his specials there is the "50/100 Mad Wing Challenge" where you see if you can finish all of the wings on your plate for a hefty prize. Five free dinners on Ricky Maddox (10 if you complete the 100 wings) signed jersey from Ricky and the rest of the Yellowknife roster, and your name on the Wall of Champions.

What brings the pool side of his business is that there are pool tables all throughout the bar. And he loves the game so much that he offers people pool lessons on the side, the bar is open 24/7 so that gives him or any of his employees ample time to show anybody willing the ropes on all of the basics of pool, to help elevate their game.

Sometimes all it takes is a tweak in motion/form to get you where you want to go and that's what "Mad Maddox Wings" is all about. Nothing but positive vibes, good music, good pool and chicken wings. What more can you ask for? Besides the beautiful bartenders, of course (we got plenty of them too). Haha

Times are tough for the Winchester family this season. Having poor representation by his sports agency Winchester is locked in for a league minimum contract through the end of season 6. This is following his rookie contract of the minimum salary for 3 years. Angus Winchester will likely go down in history as one of the lowest paid players in the NSFL. And given his offseason habit of making more Winchesters, it is getting harder and harder to pay the bills. To that end, Angus Winchester has begun moonlighting as a male exotic dancer. Instead of spending his Friday and Saturday nights with his wife and kids, Winchester finds himself dancing on stage in a banana hammock and a bowtie at an Orange County Chip n' Dales during the offseason. The monster of a man draws the biggest crowds of screaming, sweaty, drunk middle-aged women on the west coast. It is rumored that @DeathOnReddit 's mother flies all the way from Arizona every weekend for a private dance with her favorite offensive lineman. Although it was a difficult decision for Winchester to make at first, it soon became so lucrative he couldn't give it up. He won't admit how much he makes on the record, likely for tax purposes, but he is rumored to be leaving with over $5000 on a good night.

Outside of football, Bork Bjornsson has always been an avid fisher and outdoors man.

While this doesn't directly correlate with an off season job per se, Bjornsson does supplement his NSFL contract income with leading private outdoor tours around the wilderness of Yellowknife and throughout the rest of the North Western Territories of Canada. Whether it’s boating in Great Slave Lake (yes that’s really what it’s called), hiking around Vancouver, or going on extended fishing trips, Bjornsson spends the majority of his offseason leading small groups on these outdoors adventures.

He doesn’t need the income, but his proceeds from these outdoor treks typically go towards different charities, including the Bork Foundation which rescues stray dogs and finds them new homes. The Bork Foundation is actually a nonprofit, with Bork acting as it’s CEO, and so he gets a modest paycheck as well from that, which he promptly re-donated back into the Bork Foundation.

Finally, Bork’s wife is a prominent private chef, cooking for famous actors, rich businessmen, and politicians. Together, their household does not hurt for money, especially combining Bjornsson’s outdoor escapades, Bork’s Bork Foundation technical income, and Berta’s private chef business. Despite all this, there is still a statistically significant change that Bjornsson falls into bankruptcy after retirement because that’s what happens to almost all athletes.

The offseason is tough grind for players and some players get the added stress of a second job. For Vikian Marmeladov the job he does, during the offseason to keep some extra cash in his pocket, is data analyst for a medical company. When asked about it he answered with a bit of blush “It's not the most exciting work...well honestly it's on the other side of the spectrum compared to playing in the NSFL. But it's something I love to do. I’ve always loved working with numbers and the medical field helped me achieve that.” Marmeladov graduated with a major in biology and a minor in statistics from University of Central Florida. “It has been awesome how understanding my company has been to allow me to still play during the season and keep my mind at work. I won't bore you with the details but it's me really just sitting and reading numbers all day. I would love to one day maybe shift over to a sports side of analytics or at least dip my feet in that.” When asked which job he prefers he answered with a smirk, “Well I love playing football but I know I can't do that forever and well...I cant get hurt with the analyst job.”

Really? CA Chess makes a whopping NSFL salary of $2 million dollars in addition to the $5 million or whatever the fuck they pay General Managers nowadays, why in the hell would he need a summer job? I mean come on, even the minimum contracts in this league are six figures -- this isn't 1928 we don't need to have multiple jobs to make ends meet. Personally, Chess likes to live in Er's garage but that has nothing to do with finances, like I said he makes somewhere around $7 million a year so it's more because he likes the atmosphere of Er's garage than anything else. Realistically he could afford to live just about anywhere in Arizona but he picks Er's garage due to ambiance. Listen, if your players are struggling with finances CA Chess would be happy to help you out as a financial advisor -- if you're having difficulty making a multi million dollar salary work don't be ashamed it's okay to ask for help. And who knows, maybe if you're lucky there's a sweet teammate's garage you could take up residency in for a little while. Honestly the National Sim Football League should probably introduce a rookie finances symposium to help bite this problem in the ass. No need to get out the tiny violins for the people paid more than most see in a lifetime to play a children's game.

Dermot Lavelle doesn't need to work in the offseason, why? Because he's a multi-millionaire professional NSFL athlete who made just 4 million earlier this year with another next season. You don't need a job if you make this much, provided you don't run yourself into the ground with silly financial decisions.

With the exception of Lavelle's newly furnished home which he has just purchased outside of Yellowknife and the prime real estate he has purchased in Inuvik, Lavelle has little to no expenses barring his transportation costs. No extravagant purchases, basic living amenities and a relatively quiet social life is the name of the game.

With the exception of limited nights out in Yellowknife with teammates Jogn Floggity, Chris Orosz and Kevin Cushing, Lavelle doesn't splurge much when he's out. Preferring quality of quantity in his drinks, Lavelle looks for the most potent drink to get shitfaced as quickly as possible.

More often than not when the night is over, in order to save his fortune Lavelle will often attempt to make the trek home from the center of Yellowknife to his home just outside of town. This leads to A: being picked up by teammates after falling in a ditch on the way home or B: taking a rough nap in any of the suitable farmers fields in the lovely Northwest Territories countryside.

While taste testing dog food for Blue Buffalo dog food company, Boggs also takes up another business during the offseason. The young 22 year old has recently declared for the S1 inaugural PBE entry draft, where he will compete in a baseball league during the offseason. "Yeah, I just feel like I'm so well suited for this sport. A little known fact about me was that I made the Little League World Series a while ago representing USA. I'm a great hitter who wields a boomstick." Boggs has been notably slower on the base paths in baseball, though. "Yep. I can never fit baseball shoes that fit my size, size 11 46/74. It's ridiculous, really. I have to either squeeze on a pair of 11 1/2s or put on a floppy 12. There's no happy medium. So I focus my game on the bigger things, like hitting for power." Boggs is playing shortstop, which is different from many other multi-sport athletes, who mainly played in the outfield. "Ha, it's different. Definitely different. But I do me. I chill." Boggs is one of the top prospects in the draft, and has recently stated that he would prefer to play for a team in Colorado, so he could play both baseball and football in the postseason.
