Well… who would have guessed that the second edition of Dizzy’s week in review for the Kansas City Coyotes would be the last. That’s right, as some of you may have seen I was lucky enough to have been selected as the Co-GM for the Palm Beach Solar Bears. So after this edition of Dizzy’s week in review, I will be covering everything Palm Beach Solar Bears from the draft, to preseason, to regular season, and through the playoffs. I want to thank the Kansas City Coyotes for claiming me and giving me an early opportunity at going for a championship. Much love to all of you guys, but I look forward to the new challenges that are ahead of me.
Portland Pythons @ Kansas City Coyotes (Conference Championship)
So the first game that we are bringing to you is the re-match of the final game of the regular season where Kansas City squeezed out a win in order to take first place in the conference giving them homefield advantage in the playoffs. I predicted this to be a quarterback battle but it was the running backs that really made waves. For the Coyotes, Davenport and Wade combined for 121 yards rushing on 25 total attempts. Davenport and Wade each also put 1 touchdown up on the board. Smallwood-Chess was once again the workhorse for the Pythons accumulating 118 yards on 30 attempts while adding a touchdown. In terms of the quarterbacks, it was definitely Jenkins that came out with the upper hand. Jenkins completed 28/41 passes for 281 yards, a touchdown, and a pair of interceptions. Those interceptions really could have hurt the Coyotes, but they benefited from McCoy having a relatively ineffective day where he completed 12/22 passes for 139 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions. Anoa’i for Kansas City had the best day for receiving as he hauled in 10 receptions for 111 yards. On defense, Portland was led by Larosee who collected 12 tackles and defended 1 pass. The Coyotes on the other hand were led by Pierce who had 13 tackles, 1 sack, and 1 pass defended. This game really came down to Kansas City’s defense remaining stout and really limiting Portland’s chanced.
Final Score: Kansas City 21 – Portland 10
Tijuana Luchadores @ Kansas City Coyotes (Championship)
Down to the final game of the season. The Tijuana Luchadores came into this one after knocking off heavy favorites in the San Antonio Marshals in the conference championship. Their confidence definitely showed as the bolted out to a 24-7 halftime lead. The Coyotes, wouldn’t go down without a fight though. Kansas City would kick a field goal with 27 seconds left in the game to send it to overtime where they would eventually lose, but it was still a comeback for the ages. Davenport was once again a total beast for the Coyotes. He ran for 152 yards on 22 carries while adding a touchdown. Tijuana’s rushing attack wasn’t nearly as effective, but it was backed up by a monster game from Havran at quarterback. Havran threw for 315 yards on 30 completions with a touchdown. Havran was also able to spread the ball around very effectively hitting a total of 8 different receivers. Anoa’i for the Coyotes was predictably the leading receiver with 5 catches for 105 yards. Rookie tight end, Chase Jensen, was a big red zone target as he 4 receptions for 20 yards, but hauled in 2 touchdowns. Mills VIII was the leader on defense for the Luchadores making 9 tackles, while Jefferson IV was the leader for Kansas City making 10 tackles and forcing a fumble. All-in-all, this was an incredibly close game with each team displaying a dominant half and a real back in forth in overtime.
Final Score: Kansas City 27 – Tijuana 30
